It's also a nice idea for people who can't have their own cats, for whatever reason: renters, students, etc.

The Filbert Steps in San Francisco used to have a colony (or else they were owned indoor/outdoor cats) who were happy to give some love to stray humans, but that was a long time ago. I've heard of cat cafes in European and/or Scanadanavian countries but this is the first I've heard of in California.

We have the lazy cat cafe in my town it's really nice they don't have cat's for adoption but they collect and do alot of advertising for Lancashire cat rescue. The good thing is you can go for coffee and don't have to go into the cat room but I always end up petting the cat's ;) if they had cat's for adoption I would probably have brought home at least 2 or 3 more

There are a few cat cafes here in London, and in other parts of the country to. The best cat cafe I've been to though was in Avignon, France (which was paired up with the regional cat adoption agency, so all money spent on food and drinks and merchandise went to the organisation) and I also stayed next door to the cat cafe in Reykjavik in Iceland.

There are hedgehog, dog and owl cafes in Japan too that are of a similar vain. I think cat cafes are a great idea because they give the cats an environment close enough to a home as there is pre-adoption and they can get used to socialising with a lot of different people. I remember speaking to the owner of Avignon's cafe and he said that the cats at the cafe often got adopted more quickly than the cats in the organisation's shelters, particularly the kittens. There were also stories about the cat's new lives and how they were settling into their adoptive homes when you first came into the cafe, which was a really nice touch as well as a board of current cats for adoption. We were almost tempted by a very sweet tabby kitten but the international boarders drew us back!
