I am trying to see if anyone has had a similar experience or anything, or has any suggestions for me. This may be long and I apologize, I am trying to get all info out and keep my mind off things.
Early July my husband and I rescued a kitten. The kitten was tiny, and found outside in the heat, and hadnt eaten in almost two days according to my BIL who was the one who found the kitten. (No i do not know why they didnt put out any water or anything for her). They live two hours from us and we convinced him to bring the kitten to us the next day.
At her arrival, we thought she was dead. She had bad fleas, she couldn't walk or even really lift her head. She couldn't close her left eye and as a result it was dried, shrively and infected. We dripped some water into her mouth and she thirstily reached for more. I immediately went out to buy kitten formula, bottles, heating pad....he had initially told us he thought it was a few months old but she was merely a couple weeks old.
She drank water and kitten formula, we helped her pee and poop, and she gained strength. She had a vet visit and was dewormed, given probiotics, eye medicine and drops, and we found out she was merely 6oz and they estimated her to be about 3 weeks. it was recommended we try some Royal Canin babycat wet food as well, to assist with weight gain. We also found out that they believed she had head trauma and they believe it caused nerve damage which was why she struggled walking but with her size and age they thought she might just grow out of the wobbly and heal the damage on her own.
She loved eating, and started to grow and flourish.
She was very loved by us and my husbands work. Her first few days when she needed near constant care and monitoring she went to work with my husband and his office quickly grew to love her and help care for her. She has baskets with blankets, cat beds and such in multiple peoples offices and she still was going with him to work a few days a week where everyone took turns with her hanging out in their offices.
Thursday morning our alarm went off and she jolted awake for wet food like she always did. She LOVES wet food and when I yell "treats" she does a hoppy little run to me for food. That morning she couldn't walk. She just kept falling over. I carried her to the kitchen and fed the cats and she ate and was happy and regained strength and started walking again normally soon after. We thought maybe she slept wrong. she was fine for the workday, she went with my husband to work and when they came back she was acting normally. I went to the store and when I came home she ran to me like normal. However a few hours later she was lethargic. I fed the evening wet food to my cats and she didnt run to the kitchen and didn't eat. We decided to watch her a little bit. She continued her lethargy...we cuddled her awhile and she wasn't lifting her head around 12:45 am (friday early am) so we went to the emergency vet.
They immediately took her back and started doing tests. They told us her blood sugar was low and they were treating that, and we in length discussed her history. They were trying to figure out why her blood sugar had dropped and we couldn't find a reason but they were trying to deworm her, and go through other reasons her blood sugar might be low.
By about 3:45am they were saying that if her blood sugar reading went well we could take her home and just watch her and if she got lethargic again bring her immediately back. Unfortunately her next reading was also very low, so we set up hospitalization. She went to their ICU dept to be hooked up to a dextrose drip.
Since that, her readings have been all over the place but never staying normal. They have done all the tests they can but due to her size (She only weight 1.5 lbs and appears to be 6/7weeks old and not 11ish weeks old) and have said they cannot draw any more blood from her without fear of causing anemia.
They have NO idea what is causing her hypoglycemia or why it wont stabilize. She wasn't eating Friday. My husband went in and chatted with the vet during the day while I was working. We bought her favorite wet food and took it in friday night and asked them to offer it to her bc she ate for us (once we took the cone off which they hadn't been doing to feed her). Theyd said that she had two normal readings which we thought was positive.
Overnight I called for her test results and it sounded okay.
This morning the vet called and was going over how she was doing and we decided to rush in to talk in person before she left for the day.
So...the vet talked to us and said that she isn't really responding, they cant figure out any more tests to do or the cause. IF they take her off the drip, they expect her to fade within hours. At this point they don't expect the drip to continue helping because it hasn't yet but were okay with us leaving her on it until tomorrow just in case. Tomorrow morning they said for us to come in and chat about the next step...which is basically making end plans..
i am just trying to see if anyone has had anything similar and if their cat/kitten came out of it or if we are missing anything we should look into doing? And please send good thoughts to my Daisy Mae....
If you read this whole long post I appreciate it. <3
