Hi everyone. On Wednesday the 28th I brought a new addition to our house, a 5 month old kitten Gordon, to the vet for some itching he was having. They decided to give him and our other cat some flea preventative 'just in case' although didn't see any evidence of fleas. He also got a small steroid shot.

I gave the Revolution Plus on Thursday night to both, and the next day they both seemed sleepier than usual, but Gordon's lethargy continued, and he didn't really want to get up to play at all, and his third eyelids were showing heavily. He was still eating and drinking, but by Saturday I was so worried we took him to the ER. At that ER visit his temperature was 105 when he arrived, and came down after fluids to 103.5. They suggested a de-wormer and said blood test and antibiotics were not necessary at this point.

He did feel better the next few days but declined again to sleeping all day and not wanting to play at all yesterday (Tuesday, the 3rd). I wasn't able to take his temperature properly but he felt hot so I took him in to the ER again. He was at 103.5 this time. The ER vet was now very concerned and did a blood panel which came back unremarkable except slightly low Potassium which he said could be dehydration. Gave fluids and clavamox 'just in case' it's bacterial. Suggested if his fever is still going after 2 more days, bring him back to ER or get a same day vet appointment if possible.

So, i'm worried sick, I've only had this little guy for a few weeks and he's already getting probed and prodded and dragged out to vets all hours of the night without even fully settling into his new home yet. I'm just looking for some ideas on what kind of things I need to be asking my vet to test for if I need to take him back in the next few days, and if anyone's had similar experiences.

Info on Gordon: 5 months old, neutered, tested FeLV/FIV negative in July, rabies + FVCRP vaccinated.
Other cat in house is a little over a year old and was fully vaccinated as a kitten but no boosters yet. (vet said not necessary?)

Gordon lived in a foster home with my boyfriend's brother previous to our house and I found out today one of his littermates is also sick with what their vet determined could be a virus, but she is already on the mend.

ER doc mentioned FIP and Vector borne diseases which really freaked me out.

What else can I do to help him at home while he recovers? How normal is it for a fever to last this long in a cat with a virus? Does he really need to go back to the ER after 2 days or can he wait until the 10th when he has an appointment with my regular vet? (assuming he doesn't get worse)

Here's a picture of Gordie

Hi and so sorry to hear Gordie is going through all of this. Is he eating and drinking? He could be dehydrated again and might need more fluids, which could help lower his temp if it is high again. Why did they give him a dewormer?

I do think you should take him back to vet, especially since that is what they asked you to do. I know you hate to have more prodding going on with Gordie, but better to be safe than sorry - Gordie will get over it once he is feeling better again.

Find out how the littermate was treated and how long she had a fever and was sick, just as a probable baseline for Gordie. Tell the vet about the littermate too. Ask the vet if there is any way Revolution could have triggered this. And, if you don't know why they administered a dewormer, find that out as well.

Also, ask about your other cat not having been given any boosters, just to cover all your bases.

Hi.
I am sorry your kitten is this sick.

I am not a Veterinarian, so this is just a guess.

Maybe he had the virus the other kitten had, but due to the steroids he wasn’t able to get a good immune response to it and it is sort of kicking his but now. Just a guess.

Most important is to keep him hydrated. That is best done with SQ fluids like they are doing when you take him in. Ask them about selling you a set up to use at home.

Unfortunately, if what I am guessing is true, then he may be sick for a while. It is not common for a kitten to have a fever this long, but maybe it is because the steroids are still suppressing his immune system. Do you know the name of the steroids they gave?

Is the ER vet aware he was given steroids?
