My cat has just given birth to a kitten for the first time and during the birth process she tried to drag the kitten by the back paws and tail and cut off a part of the tail. Should I take them to the vet or should I just leave it? The kitten is in great health, they are moving and squeaking and our cat has accepted and fed them.

I suggest a vet visit. Of course, take mama and the entire litter, given their extremely young ages. I know that this kind of injury can heal on its own, but I have also seen them get infected to the point that the tail became necrotic and began sloughing off. You don't want to take that chance. Odds are, all he'll need is a good ointment to prevent infection, but it should be from your vet, especially at that age.

yes, if you DO have access to any decent vet, do consult him.
Better safe than sorry.

Even if healthy kittens do have some ability to heal injuries and damages.
