As I posted a few weeks ago, I got hired to work part time at a courier company. Within the first week, I was ready to quit. I don't like the hours, I want a more normal houred job, and federal unemployment continues to pay me some compensation weekly because I make LESS money than I did sitting at home on the couch even though I'm working. I do get along with the other ops supervisor as well as pretty much all the owner operator couriers. The operations manager's last day was less than a week and a half after I started and they've been without a manager since. So all these corporate people have been in and out interviewing people and helping hold the fort down. The new manager started yesterday. Nice guy. I remember them interviewing him for about 2 hours. They also have a ton of new drivers that signed on, and are still looking for more. They've had about 3-4 people quit since I've started. One of them lasted a whole 2 weeks.

Then, Wednesday, out of the blue, some number kept calling my phone. I tried Googling it like I do with unknown numbers, but it kept giving me cell phone records. There was one link that had a classified ad tied to it, it mentioned trucking in the ad but I could only see bits and pieces and when I clicked on it, it brought me to a page that didn't actually have it anymore. I left that up, and one of the corporate managers saw the classified ad and asked if I was thinking about leaving. I DID tell them in my interview I ultimately need a full time job if one falls out of the sky , though i hadn't been applying anywhere since they hired me, as I had to take on a 2nd job to have money for some of our bills. Well guess what fell out of the sky? :lol3:

Thursday morning at 7:50am, that number called again. I answered this time (I was intending to call them back around 9am, since I hadn't gotten out of work til 8pm the night before) and it was someone at an intermodal (those shipping containers go from ship/rail to truck) company saying he had my resume and wanted me to come in. I couldn't go in yesterday because I HAD to get my truck registered and on the road. I offered to come in this morning instead. I got there WAY early (traffic was in my favor!) and waited around for 35 minutes before going in. He wasn't even there yet. Talked to a girl who's been doing dispatching for 14 years and she told me how much she loves it. The company has been in business since 1932, and has multiple locations, so its pretty strong and part of a large group of well known companies.

Went into the interview and was offered the job today within 20 minutes of sitting down. Catch? He pretty much wants me to start training tomorrow (though it IS only a M-F 8-5 job, which is what I've been wanting) because that girl I talked to is leaving. I still have no idea where he got my resume from, but its an updated one so I'm assuming it was from the unemployment website. I told him I would *like* to offer 2 weeks notice to my current job, though I've only been there 3.5 weeks. He said thats the -right- thing to do, but he also needs me ASAP and may have to move on past me if I cant start quickly. I'm going to call back and find out about pay before accepting (we didn't discuss it this morning), and offering to do 1 week notice and train in the mornings next week before my current job, then start normally the following week. BF says that he knows its what I've been looking for, and its a position that 99% of the ones I've come across desire a few years of experience in already. So being able to do intermodal dispatch right off the bat with no experience in trucking (or even a completed degree yet) is a pretty awesome opportunity. The manager made an excellent point as well - once I get into this job/field, I will never be out of a job again. I can also take this wherever I move to in 1-2 years and probably find a job easily. He thinks I need to do whats best for me and no one else (and if its better pay and FT, it'll benefit both of us and the furbabies).

I just have a cloud of guilt about leaving my current job so quickly. I'm trying to remind myself that no one looks out for you except yourself in this world, and if this opportunity appeared for me so randomly - something I've been trying so hard to get into for the last couple months, maybe I just need to blow the guilt cloud away and take it ... it will help me with my future endeavors A LOT. I almost hate to say that deep down, I'm willing to make today my last day at my current job if I have to... It cant be as bad as my good friend - she's told me she's gone on breaks at jobs before and just never came back from them! She told me I haven't worked at my current job long enough to require a notice, and I DID sign a paper saying I can leave at any time with or without notice, just as they can terminate my employment with or without notice. I've just never been in such a situation!

I wouldn't have any qualms about quitting the courier job flat. Lots of those companies escort you to the door if you give notice, anyway.

I agree about leaving your job. You haven't been there long and you have to do what's best for you. And if the current job wanted to get rid of you they wouldn't give you any notice. The new job sounds like an opportunity too good to let go. Go for it!! Let us know what happens. Also I think your new employer will have a lot of respect for you for wanting to do the right thing.

You've been there such a short time that I wouldn't think anything of not giving a notice.  Many jobs have a 90 day probationary period when they canI let someone go without going through any procedure it just didn't work out.  The same is true for the employee.  A notice really isn't expected it just didn't work out for the employee.

And here I figured most people would tell me I was being inconsiderate and that two weeks notice is the best/responsible thing! :lol3: Maybe I should've just left the keys tonight and saved the stress!

After some phone tag with the new job, they confirmed a start date of Monday, working 8-12 the first week, and then go full time the second week. Some training starts tomorrow at 2pm, where we'll further discuss pay rates and what not. I offered 1 weeks notice to my current job (though most people there said they'd just leave the keys on the table and not come back!). Sent the HR lady an email before I left tonight. The 2 higher up managers who were there when I got there left about 10 minutes later so I never had a chance to say anything since I didn't know what was happening yet. Don't know if they'll just tell me to not come back, or if they'll keep me on for the last week. If they dont, well more hours to train at the first job. I'll actually make 5 extra hours of pay next week between the two. I was prepared to just quit though if I had to. I let most of the drivers know I may or may not be there Monday depending on what they say. Some of them asked me to get them jobs or find out if I can help them get out of there too! EVERYONE complained today about it, found out another driver is quitting come Wednesday, and some others have been applying for different jobs. None of them could blame me for making an upgrade!

I also found out they probably weren't far off from making my position full time. Only problem? It would've been a night shift job. No thanks, that's one of the reasons I'm leaving too - I want a normal day job. I was there til after 8pm tonight dealing with a mess of paperwork and waiting on people. Turns out I had been the only person to apply for the position when it came open (no wonder they had it on craigslist 3 times!), so some people think they may have trouble filling it. Though one of the newest drivers (been there a week) wants an office job, so maybe he'll jump in there if it does go full time.

The other supervisor told me we should keep in touch (we live in the same area of Charleston), and that he's on his way out as well soon. Going back to school for a masters degree, and has worked there 2 years longer than he wanted to. He's been telling me since I started how he's ready to leave. Must be something in the air there...

I guess we will find out come Monday what will happen - if they'll send me packing (not as though I have anything of mine even there), or if they'll continue to have me come in. Or maybe they'll call over the weekend asking me why. (Though in my notice email, I told them a FT opportunity presented itself out of the blue that I could not refuse due to benefits to my family and myself, thanked them for the opportunity and was regretful it was so short).

Two weeks notice is a thing of the past.  I live in an at will work state and employers can let you go for no reason at any time.

You did the right thing - for youself (which is most important) - and handled it professionally.

Best of luck on the new job. I know it will be perfect for you.

Now - go out and celebrate.

Thanks all :)

I started training today for the new job, and it seems like I'll get the hang of it quickly. The girl I'm replacing won't be back Monday, her last day was yesterday. She said that it seems like I've pretty much got it and that I was a good decision for them. It was pretty funny (and a small world) because it turns out she got hired for the job a friend was trying to get me into... well the friend forwarded my resume to this company and the girl I'm replacing told the manager I'd be a great fit because I DONT have experience, so I will learn their way and not come in thinking I know everything under the sun. He agreed, although was still kind of nervous about it. I learned how to do the driver payroll, what to look for on the logs, and entering import and export orders today. She let me get hands on with it which really helped me grasp it. We were there for almost 4 hours going over it, and she gave me her number as well as offered to come by after hours or on weekends if I needed more help in the coming weeks. I haven't really met anyone else there except one of the other managers who also drives. Turns out I've met one of their other drivers before when I used to spend time at the BF's job.

So far I really like it :) I haven't gotten any emails back from the company I've been working for ... not sure if they just haven't checked, or if they intend to call / talk with me Monday. Oh well. I know I made the right decision for sure  I'm actually much more excited about this job and I can already see how much it will help me reach my goals. I cant wait for Monday, as much as I love my weekends. Now I just have to set myself a schedule for my schoolwork, because I've been slacking on that already this semester and its showing.

UPDATE:

Talk about messed up!!!!!!!!!!! Monday I got stuck in 2 hours of traffic and was late my first day. I was so worried and embarrassed, though I couldn't help the fact that other people wrecked and the roads were a mess in all directions. The boss said it was fine, to take my time. It was a short morning but I had stuff going alright ... wasnt sure on everything but remembered to finish the payroll from Saturday, helped some truck drivers pick loads, and made sure to check the audit reports for any reds. At 12:15 I left and went to lunch, then off to my job at ICS. They thanked me for my notice, and I found out later told the other supervisor that they honestly couldn't blame me for leaving. I heard them calling potential people to replace me later on.

Yesterday I go in to the new job, get there early (~30min earlier than the boss), let myself in, get the computer set up, and some girl shows up with a box of desk stuff, rolodex, etc. Said she used to work there over the summer and didn't really want to be back. Boss gets there and he tells her to take my spot at the dispatch desk, sets up her stuff, starts emailing her contacts telling them she's working there, etc. I asked her if they were replacing me, and she said not that she knew of. I texted the old dispatcher I trained with and she said it seemed weird to her and see if my old job would keep me. That scared the crap out of me. So I had filled out my pre-employment paperwork, and when I turned it in, asked the boss if I had something to worry about at all since they brought her in. He said no, she was there to get me going and teach me. I felt a little better, but still felt off.

This morning I had my first ever nervous breakdown. I haven't slept well the past 2 nights, so I've been incredibly tired working both jobs and doing school stuff. I was nervous, been stressing about having so much to learn, and worried about what was going to happen. I cried the entire drive to work, couldn't stop, was shaking, heaving breaths, and BF had to talk me off my mental ledge. I calmed down, went in, and the other girl started to teach me how to do rate quotes and what to put in emails. So I felt better and was taking my notes. Then someone called, I took the info down and went to ask about their procedure. When I got in the office, the boss asked how I was doing. I said I had better mornings but was making it. He told me to close the door, and last time that happened was when I got laid off from GEL. He told me that he was having a hard time doing it, but was going to let me go and keep the other girl because he and his business partner discussed they do not have the business to keep both of us. I just FELT it coming ... He said he wanted to keep me on and train me as her backup... so I wasn't even going to be doing the job I'd been promised. They have been having financial issues at that location, so everyone tells me maybe I saved time now... but it also leaves me at square 0 with getting where I want to be.

So now I'm screwed ... I quit my PT job (still have a couple days left. They've been interviewing and posting in the classifieds... and what job is going to be like "Oh, your other job fell through and you want to stay? Sure no problem.." They know I've looked elsewhere and need something more, so I doubt they're just going to forget my notice) ... and now I don't have a FT job either. Stuck in a hard place when it comes to unemployment...Probably will have to go there and explain it to them. Whether they care or not is another thing.

A friend of mine who drives a truck texted me yesterday and said that Mediterranean Shipping Co called him - he put my resume in with them in December - and asked if I was still looking. I told him a quick version, he said I should tell the other job I'm going to get a lawyer, and then called MSC back telling them that I was looking still. Sigh. When something is too good to be true, I guess it probably is :( :(

Oh I'm sorry-- that was a rotten thing for the new c ompany to do. It shows there's no loyalty. Pls do not let this get to you, since good things will be coming your way. Please let us know what is happening.

Very rotten of them :( As if my hard time on the way in today wasn't bad enough, I bawled so hard on my way home after they let me go. I stood strong in the office and wouldn't give them the satisfaction of seeing it upset me so much, and wanted it to come off as their loss... But that's 2 jobs letting me go in under a year ... even though this time it was even worse because I never even had a real chance.

My current employer asked me how the new job was going when I came in today, so I told him the truth about it. He came to me before leaving today and said if I would like to extend my notice here, he is open to me doing so, to give me time to search for a new job if I want. He understands that I do need FT ultimately (I've told them that since day 1 so its no secret), and thinks its horrible what they did to me today. I think I may stay on for awhile longer, and take time to find something else that suits me. Or see if MSC ever calls. I'm actually surprised they were willing to keep me on, but I also think they don't have anyone to replace me yet either so they'd be in a big bind without me just like I would be without a job at all!

I just cant believe that a manager of a company would really want me to quit a job with ZERO notice, and then turn around and let me go less than three days later and tell me he hopes my other job will take me back... Its not like there are jobs waiting around every corner these days. It also hurts that I was heading in the direction I've been working towards, and it was something hard to get into, then not even given a chance to succeed. When I started spending time at the BFs job, I was lost, but within a couple weeks knew the job better than his manager, and have kept up with learning new methods and stuff there. If only they'd give me a job

What a horrible thing to have happen!  Are they paying you 2 weeks pay in lieu of notice?

Please call your other employer back and try and get your job back. If you were a good worker, and they know you only left because you needed more hours, perhaps they will be understanding.

I've worked from some pretty awful, unscrupulous employers in the past, and have had some similar things IE: someone brought in to replace me before I was even told I was being let go. It leaves a very unpleasant feeling of wanting to go and torch down their building!   lol

The company that let me go said that he would like to cut me a check for the hours I worked (4 hours Sat, 2 hours Mon, 4 hours Tues, and maybe the 1 hour today I guess) and pay me Friday. We'll see how much it is, since the only pay he confirmed was that it'd be more than what I get at my other job.

I still work at my other employer, this was to be my last week. Luckily I did NOT up and leave on Friday like this guy wanted me to do. I gave them 1 weeks notice as a sort of compromise to both places. The corporate guy who has been training the new manager here approached me before he left today and said that if I wanted to extend my notice here and continue to look for another job, then he is open to that. They told the other supervisor on Monday that they would be sad to see me go, but they also understand I do need a FT job ultimately (and things have been unorganized and hectic here since I started), so they know why I was ready to take a different job. They said that I learned so quickly and am good with the drivers. The corporate guy said that I don't have to decide today, but to think about if I'd like to extend notice, or rescind it all together.

Now I get to tell all the drivers I'm NOT leaving just yet after all, though I can still go on Friday if I want to. Some money is better than no money, because I think the other place messed up my unemployment eligibility. (since unemployment was paying me the difference every week between what I get at my job and what I had been getting for benefits)

Thanks. Its been a week and I still can't wrap my mind around the fact that someone would toy with someone's employment (and heart! As that was a job I realllllly wanted!) in such a way...

My current employer and I made an agreement yesterday - I will continue to work there while searching for a full time job. If I find one, I give them notice. In turn, they will begin interviewing (started today) candidates for my position. If they hire someone, they give me notice. Hopefully I find somewhere before they find someone! The BF is supposed to be calling a contact at one of the companies he sells tires to. I finally was able to get my resume to the company I've wanted to work for ... I'm just hoping they are interested. The terminal manager told me he would let me know if he heard anything from the corporate office. I've found a few jobs posted on Craigslist that I'm interested in, applied to a couple so far... It just stinks for someone like me who is trying to start a different career path in a time where the economy is horrible and employers have the pick of the litter. Chances are they will look over me if I don't have every bit of experience desired, even though I can learn incredibly quickly. :( Its hard to convey/prove my ability to grasp new things through a resume...

I also found a production lab position that is a 3 month contract job. My math tells me that it would be around $10,000 for the 3 months... but it is 14 hour days with two 5-day weeks and two 6-day weeks per month (6am-8pm). I have 5½ years experience in a production lab (but no degree). I'm debating on whether or not to apply, as I feel it may burn me out quickly, but is actually decent money for a short-term job as well. I guess I could give up 6 highly-desired weekend days.

All this stress about finding a worthwhile job is killing me. Knowing that I'm capable of learning something and succeeding, yet highly unlikely I'll be given a chance to prove it has been pretty upsetting.
