Can you at least report them to some cat association because obviously they are backyard breeders of some type. Even most backyard breeders do not let their cats wander around outside, as far as I know anyway.
I wouldn't know to whom I could report them, and I believe they could think it was me to report them.

In addition now, he’s probably been breeding with any other outdoor females that are not spayed so any resulting kittens people are gonna look at them and know they are part Maine coon probably if they have the features.
My colony cats are all fixed, this should not be an issue. I believe that the only intact females are the ones who live at the stable where this big cat comes from.

How do you plan to let these people know that he has FIV?
I don't think I have a plausible way to give them this info without exposing myself in the tricky matter.
Had them called and ask me whether I had news and updates about their cat, I had a plan to tell them that their cat has FIP, but this plan couldn't work if they didn't call me, and it's way too late anyway.

FIV is not a death sentence. My Wizard had Fiv his entire life and he still remained an indoor outdoor cat until later in life.
Yes, I know.
My avatar cat, Lola, had FIV and I found that out when she was 16 yo. An earlier test, at 7 months of age, said she was negative.
She lived all her life with another cat, and the second cat tested negative even a year after Lola went to the Bridge.

Meanwhile there is an update that might help me a lot.
I found lots of cat hair in a spot at the colony. It belongs to two cats, one was a long hair black cat, the other one was a white and ginger cat. The latter one is a cat that has recently joined the colony. He's an intact tom, rather aggressive. The two cats fought some days ago, that hair has been exposed to the elements for a few days, matching the time the big cat was taken to the clinic. I haven't seen the white and ginger cat in the last ten days.
I presume that this cat was either seriously scared and never came back, or he was seriously injured and is now suffering somewhere, or ever worse...

How did they tell you he was their cat after all? Did you ask them about him when he first turned up and they said it wasn’t their cat? Then it seems you can just tell them that you took him to the Dvm and had him neutered because you didn’t think he belonged to anybody. I know you don’t wanna do this. I’m just thinking out loud about how I would handle this myself. In my opinion, the greater wrong is to leave him out there breeding and in poor health, etc. Even though all of your colony cats are spayed there could be other colonies nearby I guess? It’s going to mean possible spread of FIV and more kittens, etc. who will suffer. It’s highly unlikely for a non-aggressive neutered FIV Cat to spread it.

That big black cat showed up at my colony a year and a half ago, he would appear a couple of times a month, and after some time I start wondering if he could belong to someone around and I found out that these people were the owners.

I never talked with them again until a week ago, the day after I took the cat to the vets. This time I only mentioned that their cat was visiting the dishes of my colony cats everyday, just to understand how much they care about him, I didn't say anything about the vets, even when they said that they hadn't seen their cat in the last 24h.
This was part of my plan to let them know that the cat has FIV. Now that they haven't called me in a week (and the cat is still at the local shelter), my plan has gone badly.

I guess someone else told you he was their cat? Will they tell them that? Otherwise you could have said then when you talked to them he was at dvm etc and neutered etc. Are they actively looking for him? The whole situation is odd and they’re not caring for him if he’s coming there every day and he’s in bad condition. What did the DVM say about his condition now?

No, I found out that they were the owners of the cat in the summer 2023, after a few months the cat started coming at the colony a couple of times a month.
I started asking around, they were the second place where I asked, and they said the cat was theirs.
So, I know where this cat belongs to since that time.

The cat kept visiting my colony since, and his visits became more and more frequent until he would spend more time at the colony than at his home.

The second time I talked to them was a week ago, when my plan was to understand how much they care for him. Given the nature of that talk, I couldn't tell them that their cat had been at the vets and was now at the shelter. I hoped that they would actively look for him and call me to gather some info, but they didn't.

The cat is currently at the shelter, he's eating fine and drinking much less. His wound has almost completely healed. The vet would like to see him again in three weeks to check his levels and see if that creatinine at 4.7 is still that high.

I get it now. It seems like they just don’t care. I don’t know. You would know better than me obviously…I hate to see him put back outside again with all those problems going on. That’s good he is doing better. Keep us updated on what happens. 🤗😀

I just can't come to terms with myself.
I learned that the cat's owners are still waiting for his return to home. I don't know if they are actively looking for him or if they're just waiting, but they are a little concerned and asked me to report to them any updates in the next ten days.

You havent done anything wrong here. From what you said, they are backyard breeding him and letting him wander around and roam, and not taking care of him properly. We can see he is in bad condition in the photo you posted.

I once years ago took a cat from outside to the DVM to get neutered. I was not sure if he was anyone’s cat. This was a long time ago. And he was friendly, etc.. He just let me pick him up and put him in the carrier… later I think my father found out one of the neighbors was feeding him and after I neutered him, they decided to take him in and their daughter became his person, etc. so he ended up with a good life. Meow was his name, I’ll try to find a picture…here is Meow 😀🐈 :bicolorcat:
