I have done a kitten introduction and come out the other side with everyone unscathed, is there anything different I need to keep in consideration for the introduction of a young adult?

The residents are a 21 month old neutered male moggy x cornish rex cross and a 15 month old neutered male oriental: The newbie would be a 12 month old recently neutered male oriental. All concerned are well socialised and the newbie is used to living in a multi cat home.

I would think that the normal intros would be fine. I'd just do one of the following:

1. Put a dab of vanilla extract on all their noses.

2. Sprinkle all of them with cornstarch baby powder and rub in.

3. Wash all of them with the same shampoo.

Most times, when I'd get a new cat in, he/she would be confined to a cage in the middle of the room with a partial cover around it. The other cats could see/hear the newcomer but all would be safe from each other. A few days of hissing back and forth and they were fine - newcomer could come out and mingle. Never had issues doing it that way

So who's the newcomer (color) and are you planning on a new show cat?

I used the vanilla trick - but because there is alcohol in it I NEVER put it on their noses, I put it on the backs of their necks instead, works fine for me.

Ferris and Max bonded the fastest when I brought Max home, but it still took a good week or two before they became buddies.

Thanks, at least this time I won't have to be concerned about a size difference! The cornstarch is probably the way to go, I probably already have some. He's a lilac boy, I won't be showing him.

Curious as to why you are adopting another Oriental - you need an Ocicat in your house

Don't you know that 1 Ori is never enough?

How exciting! Can't wait for the
!

I'm interested in seeing how it goes for you...I think our next kitty will be a young adult male.

Here's some that all goes well with the intros.

Welll that is true, but it also applies to the cornies
Still think you really NEED a spotted cat in the house.

Well Sonic had ghost spots when he was little so I know he's genetically a spotted underneath the blue, does that count? Very cute but of course they went when he got his adult coat. I think this will be our last for now unless we move somewhere bigger

I suppose its acceptable for now
Wonder if the lilac (being even lighter then blue) would show some spots. If not, you can always spray paint a few spots on him......

Well he's being neutered next week, so shouldn't be too long until he comes to ours. Is it a good idea to have some Feliway plugged in for a few days before he arrives?

Won't hurt. But I've introduced cats a long time without it
IMO the rexes and orientals tend to hang out together and seem less upset if you bring in the same breed. So you may not need it - just do normal introductions.

It might have been more of a problem if you only had one, but you have 2 and they shouldn't be too upset about another boy coming in.

Well we've now let them meet! I used the vanilla, I discovered that Radar really doesn't like vanilla!

Radar is delighted. He greeted Jacob with the same enthusiasm that he greets new humans, I could see that he was very happy and extending an invitation to play- bounding up to Jacob and then bounding away again, tail up and ears forward, with a look of joy on his face. As usual though he was a bit overwhelming (lets face it, it is a fairly odd response from a resident adult to a newcomer!) and Jacob didn't know what to make of it at all. Sonic is a bit disgruntled.

I think it's going OK though, Sonic and Jacob are a bit growly and wary of one another, and Radar who has never growled in his life is leaping around happy as Larry and looking confused when he gets growled at. There has also been some nose touching and bum sniffing. I've not seen any flattened ears or outright signs of aggression, it's mostly just vocal and following each other round at a distance.

Sounds really good
And Radar is just a nutty rex you know - not surprised at his reaction. My rex males were like that - hardly anything phased them and they didn't growl or hiss much. However the rex females were another story

Now where are the pictures?????

Sonic's 'growl radius' has decreased today, he's letting Jacob get a bit nearer to him before starting to make silly noises. And Jacob and Radar slept on the bed at the same time, not snuggling, but a couple of feet apart and comfortable enough with that to nap. Then Radar went and cuddled Sonic and Sonic let him, which never happens, so it's certainly changed the dynamic between those 2 for the better - not that it was bad before, but they were never snuggly with each other.

2 growling Orientals is a very strange sound, nothing is quite like an Ori growl/yowl - it says so much more than 'keep your distance', it's an impassioned declaration to all within earshot about just how unfair life is.

I put a couple of photos of Jacob in the Fur Pictures forum, none of them together yet, they haven't stayed close enough for long enough - but I am confident that it won't be too long

I just had cuddles from all 3 of them at the same time, all purring and relaxed, and Jacob let Radar groom him, then Sonic curled up and went to sleep within 18" of Jacob. They first met 28 hours ago.

Wow, what a fabulous introduction!!! I can't believe they're such good friends already! Stumpy is like Radar - she just loves visitors - people and cats. She's also about as crazy and frustrating and cute like Radar I'm thinking
I think they'd get on well...

Anyway, so what made you decided to get another kitty? Where did Jacob come from?

I was supposed to be helping a friend find an adult cat, word got out and Jacob's details were sent to me by a breeder we know to pass on to our friend. Nate didn't need too much persuasion to agree to offer him a home ourselves. My friend was fine with it as he was keen on finding a slightly older special needs moggie. So Jacob came to live with us
