Fluff was a lot like Tuxie with food, artiemom artiemom and yes, fionasmom fionasmom , he was a TNRd colony cat though not "feral." Fluff is a social eater. He really loves having my company while he eats. And yesterday he ate a whole tin of Blue Buffalo Tastefuls beef PLUS a 3 oz. tin of BB Wilderness Kitten chicken & trout He's been doing really well on his eating and understands that when he eats, I praise him a lot. He gets the connection and wants to please. Even foods he has snubbed in the past get finished when I sit with him and praise him. Is Tuxie a social eater too, I wonder?
And I wonder if Tuxie doesn't like the kind of litter. Hopefully it's UNSCENTED and scoopable. Cats' natural preferred substrate is sandy, and the scoopable mimics that most closely. Since they are much more sensitive to smell than humans, and do not like the fake chemical "perfumey" smells that scented litter have, most if not all experts warn against it. They also suggest no covered boxes, since they can make a cat feel trapped. A high sided box is best. Have you tried a little whiskbroom/dustpan set from a dollar or home store, artiemom artiemom ? I have one of these near each box. They make cleanup very quick and easy. There are also litter mats--I have these by 2 of our boxes and since Fluff only uses one box, it's not a problem. In fact, I have VERY LITTLE cleanup as he does not kick litter out of the box; and I'm using much, much less litter with him because of this. For some reason, he only generally uses the box once a day, for both functions.

Most of my cats (when they were much younger) went through the "play in the litter and throw it around" phase. As annoying as it was, I just kept sweeping it up and they all grew out of it. Actually, they have developed that "I hate the feel of litter between my feet" and the only scattered litter I find is from when they exit the box and shake off their paws a bit. With all the toys Tux has and the fact that you play with him, I'm confident that given time, he'll decide that the litter game is boring compared to the others.
(Both of my puppies, at some point in their growth, decided that potty pads were toys that could be shredded, ripped up, or carried through the house. I discouraged this obviously, but I wasn't sure how to do so without causing avoidance so for that I used a bitter spray so it wasn't fun for them to carry. Doesn't help your situation, but...you have a teenaged cat...I have a teenaged puppy. They really can try our patience can't they?)

LOL, whisk brooms are my saving grace! I have two, one lives next to the litter box, and one lives in the kitchen next to the feeding station. THAT one get a lot of use, since Staxxie is on Royal Canin Gastro-Intestinal diet, dry.

tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 I finally came to the conclusion that Tuxxie's kicking out the litter meant that there was too much litter in the box. He is the first cat I have had that does not want much litter in there! An inch is sufficient for him.
I put his first litter box-- extra large sized regular height on, under his new High sided, but smaller one. I also put a really ancient scatter rug in front of the box..
I HAD a litter catcher rug, until Tux decided he wanted toe at it!! Yup, he bit pieces out of the rug! That rug is gone.

The litter is unscented.. I have asthma, cannot have scented litters. I do not believe in them.

Yesterday he was really wild.. I play with him in the morning, give him breakfast, then he is playing again!! And goes wild.. He did that last night----- 3 hours plus of running around, sliding on kitchen floor-- banging into the walls, doors, jumping in and out of boxes.. just going crazy! jumping on and off his cat tree... falling off his cat tree! Literally 3 hours of craziness.. and of course, periodically attacking me!! and his Teddy Bear--- carrying him around the apartment, trying to "kill" him.. He is so wild.

I tried the calming treats... I think they take a while to work.. by then, it is his nap time.. I get about 5 hours of quiet!
Yesterday, I decided to put the Comfort Zone Pheromone Collar on him. Mind you, I have never had a cat wear a collar. I really do not believe in them.. but I am desperate at this point. It was a 'job' to get it on him. Good thing I had socks, slippers, long sleeve shirt on! But, I put him in the corner of my recliner, trapped him in there, and successfully put it on--- with a lot of fighting! Only 2 new scratches!!
I was so afraid of it being too tight, that his lower jaw got caught in it, twice!! OMG.. He went crazy when that happened. I think I have it correct now. It has stayed in place. Funny, For being an outside semi-feral cat, Tux does not mind having the collar on... weird. I thought he would go nuts trying to take it off... nope, he took it in stride, once it was fitted correctly. It is a break away collar.. sooooo...

This morning, around 5am, as I was lying on my side in bed, dozing... I was jolted away by the launch of a cat, yelling MEOW, in my ear, and landing on my hair-- which was on top of my head!!!! He timed it just right-- as he was flying over my head, he MEOWED right into my ear.. Man, this cat..

As per free feeding.. I do not think this is going to work well with Tux..If he likes his food, as in the dry, He will immediately demolish the entire amount that is put out for him. He is getting heavy.. so I have to cut back a bit..
He seems to love turkey, good with chicken, no to fish... weird.. The Purina (shudder) seems to be his favorite. I have the Pro Plan and Purina One for him. He is going onto a mix of the dry kitten food (chicken) mixed with regular chicken. Then he will go on the indoor dry food. He goes in spurts of ravenously devouring his food to a slow feeding of the wet.. depending on brand and flavor.

Gotta get going.. It takes me over an hour to pick up after him!! You should have seen Tuxxie when I was trying to change my sheets!! OMG.. His attention span is short.. Does not stay in one position for more than 30 seconds!!

He forgot what he learned the other day about his scratching post...sigh....

Oh man, life will never be boring again with Tuxie in it! Sounds like he needs a 5 hour nap to recharge so he can raise heck all over again! 🤣

Yeah, what is it with ferals only wanting Purina?! Mine are the same way. I kinda liked Rachel Ray dry food, but they were like give me back my Purina!

The Purina ProPlan is not a bad food. Does Tuxie like Fancy Feast at all? How about Nutro? That's another mid-range food that some cats like. I've fed their wet and dry in the past.

Do you know if Tuxie came from a colony and/or was in a multicat situation? because it sounds to me that he's a social cat, like Fluff, and that he misses feline company. If he had a feline friend, a LOT of his energy and possible frustration could be redirected in play and interaction with a buddy.
Oh yeah, how well I know the dark-thirty launches and MEOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWS!:angrycat:
My litter mats are rubbery. I think I got both of them at Petco, quite awhile ago. If you search "litter mats at Petco" you'll see some similar ones in different colors. I don't think they'd appeal to Tuxie's palate.

Yeah, I thought about the fact that Tux would do very well with another cat. He was found with his 'brother'..
A woman was feeding both of them. She was able to bring Tux into her kitchen; but the brother escaped all efforts at trapping. He is still out there. That is all I know about his background.

There is no way I can afford another cat.. not with vet bills, food, litter, no space for another cat.. Besides my lease limits me to one pet.

BTW, I have had a dust pan and brush since the days of Artie..

I am now at the conclusion, that I will just have to wait out Tux's episodes; until he outgrows them.. OMG>. I will probably not be around when he calms down.. If, my body can handle him-- Tux, the cat from he!!...
How long does it take?????

I keep telling myself that he has only been off the streets for a month.. neutered 4 weeks ago.. with me for only 3 weeks tonight!

sigh...
Just went grocery shopping and took this picture!! OMG... a terror...

I have a covered litter box.. I may save it until he gets a bit calmer, or so...

Man, my allergies are bad today.. cannot be from him.. cuz asthma is making me a bit SOB..

Hoping you can focus on the progress Tux is making and on just loving him! He will calm down in time.

Waiting for the 'time' to calm down. When will that be??

I do not think the calming collar is doing anything for him. I am about to give up. He is eating like a feral-- ravenously, all at once. He loves his dry food. I am going to try to cut down a bit, but I am not certain how much to feed him. He has put on about a pound since adoption. I can feel it and see it. Now he looks like a cat, instead of a kitten. Man, I wish he would end his fighting with me. I am really tired of it.

I was feeding two cans a day and 2/3 - 1 cup of dry.... Now I am trying to cut down on each.. just a bit. I find that free feeding him does not work. He eats it up immediately. Now trying, 1/2 can in morning.. 1/3 dry around noon time or later, the rest of the can at supper, and at least 1/3 -- 1/2 cup overnight. If he gets hungry, he goes crazy looking for food.. I was giving the calming treats--- uncertain if they helped calm him or gave him extra calories. Greenies are only occasionally. Trying to use them as a reward when he really does something good. Difficult to do, cuz I do not carry them around. Tux can smell them, also..

Hoping you can focus on the progress Tux is making and on just loving him! He will calm down in time.
I really cannot see any progress at all. He is about the same as the day I took him home. It is frustrating. No, I am not at the stage where I can enjoy him, due to his attacks. If I could hold him for a few minutes, IF he could show me some love, instead of aggression, I would feel better.
Yes, sometimes he makes me laugh.. as in the picture from the last post of mine; but those are few and far between.
It takes 30 minutes of play, first thing in morning... then at least 45 minutes to pick up after him, before I shower.
Then another shorter play session later... Plus always sweeping the litter up.. Tuxxie does pee a lot, compared to Geoffrey and Artie.

The only progress is that he knows his name, he is always in his cat tree, right now on the windowsill, Recognizes that he is allowed to fight with Teddy and Lamb Chop, Knows that num-nums mean food, realizes the meaning of 'treats', knows the word 'play' means wand toy. Still not using cat scratcher.. Loves the tub and the bathroom sink.. I have to wash it down before brushing teeth as it has black (from litter) spots in it..

I guess I am really upset about the heart murmur.. I was hoping for a healthy cat.. undecided if I made a huge mistake in adopting him... That is really in the middle of my mind.

It seems his attention span is about 30-40 seconds. When he jumps on me in bed, he cannot stay still for longer than that.. the same when I try to hold him. or even brush him. I swear he is getting worse--- probably because he is feeling more comfortable in this place.
Is it all because he was a feral? and/or was unsocialized? or just a kitten without boundaries?
I wish I could go over to him, and pet him for more than 30 seconds.. sigh.. then he turns.. a NO is not working..
The spray bottle makes him run away-- when he is attacking me.. IF I have it handy..

His eyes are wild when he plays. Tux seems to turn so fast from quiet to aggressive. Is that normal??
Sigh, I wish Jackson Galaxy was here, for advice. Sometimes I wonder if Tux will ever be calm..

What about a slow feeder or puzzle feeder for Tux's dry food. The mental stimulation is good and it might give you an extra 5min of peace.

Btw Purina would be what mine were on for dry if they hadn't added beef fat, which Magnus is allergic to. They said it was rendered but his feet still swelled up. :(
I don't recommend grain free dry foods. They're stuffed with peas and legumes and all my cats were frequently sick on them. So much vet expense gone after just moving back to a regular food with rice

Perspective is everything. Life is full of challenges and a lot of very trying times. It's all in how we look at things. I'm still an optimist and I still focus on the positive rather than the negative. All of the things you've listed as positive are progress. He is very young. He has not been with you for long. He will grow, and he will calm down in time.
I've given my feedback, and it stands. I would NOT use a spray bottle on him. It will only make him equate you with something stressful and unfriendly. I would try hissing, keep using "NO!" and walk away from him/give him "timeouts" when he acts out. Play with him before bedtime to tire him out. What size tins are you feeding him? Two 3-oz tins are probably okay, with very little dry and treats; 2 5.5 oz would be too much if he is gaining weight at this rate. Definitely cut down on his portions. 2 tins plus 2/3-1 C dry would be too much. I would delete the calming collar. And I would be heavy on praise, in a gentle, loving tone of voice, whenever he does something you like. RE: the murmur, a LOT of cats, people, and others have them, and live normal lives with them. And I lived in 332 sq. ft. for a year with my then 3 cats, quite well. They were adults, with calm natures, and had been with me for years. The secret in small spaces is to provide cat furniture or other things that they can utilize to increase their vertical options.

Jamie was dxed with HCM at 2 years old and is fine at 8. It is not a blanket diagnosis to have a heart murmur.

Is it all because he was a feral? and/or was unsocialized? or just a kitten without boundaries?
I don't think he is a true feral as he would not have ever made it to adoption. Being unsocialized is probably more like it.

I really do not have any more pictures of Tux. The last one I posted was the best. I took one where he was watching the vacuum. He is not afraid of it, but is interested in it.

IMG_2102.jpeg

He loves the dry Swiffer-- thinks it is a toy. When I gather a bunch of litter, turn around to get the dust pan & brush, Tux does a sliding jump into the pile--- every day and each time I sweep... It is comical.. but a lot of work.

We had 2 good days of no scratches or bites. I took off the Comfort Zone collar. Tux did not like it. I am not a fan of collars for cats.I also pretty much stopped the calming treats. I want to see how this new approach works. And I am trying, really trying to award good behavior with one or two Greenie Treats. I try to keep them with me.. if I remember. This morning was a step back-- too wild-- 2 scratches.

Also frequently used the NO; UH-UH.. a hiss, and a growl to contain him. That and throwing him his teddy bear when he act up, along with walking away seemed to work.. until this morning-- wild.. I swear he is crazy for 4 hours each morning and evening!

Tuxxie loves his teddy bear. I throw it at him when he is aggressive. He knows what it is for.. As soon as I pick it up, he runs towards me.. Poor Teddy.

Tux's appetite is ravenous. He just loves his dry food. He knows where I keep it. If he does not want his wet food, he will search around for the dry, getting into things, and mischief. He has put on quite a bit of weight.. I cannot feel his ribs. Right now, I am keeping constant with his food.. trying to cut down a bit.. but it is difficult when I am trying to train him.

Last night he was on my lap-- on the fleece throw about 3-4 times.. kneading, purring, and suckling.. My throw is a mess. I need to wash it and another one. Tux did allow me to pet him while he was kneading. That was a positive. He was still wildly running around, taking a flying leap over things, onto his cat tree. Playing with his toys.. just crazy.

This morning he was so crazy that he literally leaped over me, in my chair, taking one step and leaping on to the top of his cat tree. It was swaying so much, I thought it was going to topple over.. I think that scared him, cuz he stopped for a bit...

My cleaner should have been here 25 minutes ago.. Wonder if she forgot?? I left a message and a text for her.. no answer...
sigh.. have to put stuff back. I will give her 5 more minutes.. Guess she is not coming......

Sounds like it's the same with Tux as it is with just about anyone -- feline, human, or ??? We have our good days and our not-so-good days, our hyper days and our calmer days. One thing, one day, at a time. Little reductions in his diet. Lots of patience. And LOTS OF LOVE.
We got a shipment from Petco so I had to break that down, bring it in, fix it for storage in the sideboards. Fluff wanted to be right there in the midst of it. Fortunately this house has a lot of doors and I just shut the door to the laundry room, where I bring the supplies in, and opened the back door. When I finished doing all of that, he was right there on the other side and was a tremendous help in bringing everything in.;)

I really do not have any more pictures of Tux. The last one I posted was the best. I took one where he was watching the vacuum. He is not afraid of it, but is interested in it.

Hoping your cleaner showed up and did a good job...and that the OTHER "terrible twos" is bringing some joy to your SUNday... :redheartpump: :bicolorcat::redheartpump::sunshine:

What a heartwarming story! Tux is a very handsome gentleman in his little tuxedo. Tuxies tend to have wonderful personalities, and become very attached to their humans.
I do not know how heartwarming it is!! :lol2: It is nerve-wracking to me!!:hyper:
I cannot wait until Tuxxie is tame..

This morning, I discovered something NEW about him. Tux has now learned how to open my Closet Door!! It is a bifold door, in the entryway. He manages to put his paw under the door, right at the separation and pulls it open!! OMG--- I adopted a diabolical devil!! That should be his Halloween Costume-- a Devil!!

Shush--- do not want to jinx myself... He has stopped attacking my legs and feet; But NOT my hands and arms. sigh..
His claws are long--- so fast. They were just trimmed on 10/1.. Have to take him in next week.. too busy this week.

It is always 3 - 4 hours of craziness each morning.

This was the latest from My Cat from He!!.......

Tuxie is very smart!!! SNORGLES on him from me and my funny kid Fluff, who was in a rip-snortin' mood yesterday, charging and sailing onto things. He got the "NO!!!"s, of course, and is somewhat more calm today after a surprise puke early this morning -- on the comforter. So I had to get up and clean. It may have been as a result of the tapeworm tab I gave him yesterday? because we battled fleas in the late summer.
