I wanted to introduce everyone to my little one: Tux; the kitty who wears a tuxedo!

Tux came home Wednesday, 9/18 at 8pm. It has been a real experience. He is young, around 14 months. In early September, he was found in the next city. Tux and his brother were being fed by a kind lady. She was able to bring Tux into her kitchen until the shelter could pick him up; but, his brother got away.... Tux was recently neutered, 9/11; so his litter box stinks to high heaven! Boy does it stink!!

I saw him by chance: I was disappointed and really wanted a different cat, but he went to a different home. I was devastated. Went down to thank one of the volunteers, who was trying to help me. She steered me in the direction of Tux. I took him in my arms, he purred immediately. I cannot say it was immediately love; it was more like an 'immediate' "I Want YOU!"... I wanted a younger cat; but not a kitten.. so I ended up with an older kitten who lost his mama too soon, and is partially socialized. I gothic before he went into the general adoption area, and before anyone else saw him!!

Tux has a lot of potential. I have discovered he was taken from his mom too soon. I have a fleece throw on the sofa with larger one which I cover up with at night. Tux jumps onto of the fleece, kneads like crazy, while suckling it... Yup, a sign that he lost his mom too soon.

Tux has not been fully socialized. He still bites and scratches. He is a needy cat. He craves love and attention. He follows me everywhere I go; is always in the same room as me. He loves to be loved---- but on his own terms. He purrs each time he is held. Tux jumped on my lap the first night. He does not know the meaning of "NO".. We are working on that. He is smart.

But, Tux wants and knows love. He craves it.. HE is smart. The first morning I was getting his breakfast, he jumped on the counter. I gently picked him up, saying "NO, you do not jump up here". He has not done that again. I showed him where he can sit and look out. It is on top of my air conditioner, white my desk next to it.. Tux loves both.. right now he is lazing on top of the AC unit!

We are working on the NO word. He is funny.. he makes me laugh. He loves his wand toys. The laser drives him crazy! He is a good eater. Weighs only 10 lbs, has a a shortish plushy squirrel like tail.

Tux jumps into the recliner when I get up! The other day, I almost sat on him!! When I am sitting on the sofa, he is next to me. Occasionally he jumps on my lap. He slept on my lap for an hour, on Friday. He is always with me. When he thinks it is time for bed, he runs in, jumps on the bed--- right where I get in! I have to squish him over. He will sleep at my feet.. not really touching, but there... During the day, when I lie down, he will jump on the bed with me, putting his little face in the palm of my outstretched hand.

Tux know what a litter box is for. He loves his food. Right now I am giving him pretty much the same as the shelter: Purina Plus (ugh) kitten dry & Fancy Feast. He gets one can of FF twice a day, and 1/3 cup of dry twice a day. I tried some Hills kitten salmon this morning--- no go for either of us. The smell was disgusting. He only ate a tiny bit, and covered it up.. He had some Friskies chunks in the shelter-- not a fan of it. I tried one can at home, nope. I mean, he ate it, but it took a while. He gobbles his food. I would love to feed him a good food, but as I was feeding prescription food for 2 kitties, I am at a loss.

He has a Vet Appointment on 10/2. It is with someone Dr B's secretary uses!!! So grateful for her!! She has been a godsend.. Took care of everything for me!!

Tux is just starting to calm down. His eyes and body were on constant high alert for 3 days. This is the beginning of our 4th day together. As with a feral, you could not look him straight on. He would get aggressive and fight. He still does when he is overstimulated. He has to calm down. He went after my feet and legs Friday! I had to use an empty paper towel roll to his rump, in order for him to stop. Now, we are slowly learning each others ways. I am using the little bop on his nose or top of his head, when he starts--- as what a mother cat would do to a kitten.

Tux does not know what a scratcher is. I think it is the first time he has seen a rug. He is using my rug as a scratcher.. sigh; he will learn..
He is just starting to learn how to play.. I discovered yesterday, that he loves boxes. This morning, I found out he loves paper bags!
He has his balls, his Jackson Galaxy cuddler, a pickle, a Yeow banana, a chew mouse. I do not think catnip affects him. I got him a cat tree, but he has yet to realize it is for him to climb. I keep putting him up there.

All in all, he is keeping me quite busy! His litter is everywhere. I need to find a high sided, not huge litter box. I may just buy one of those boxes that has the rim around it. He pees quite often and poops during the night.. Lucky me---- another cat who wakes me up to tell me that his box is full or that he pooped!! I am so lucky!! He also loves to play at that time of night!! yikes..

Tux loves the tub!! And is fascinated with the shower! Thursday morning, as I was showering, I looked down and saw a black & white face peeking at me from between the shower curtain and liner!! He loves the dripping faucet. No, I am not going to get him a fountain.. He is giving me enough work as it is. But, I really love him. He greets me when I return! He runs to me..

He is a little moldable older kitten. I hope his feral tendencies leave soon. He is really sweet, deep down. That part really wants to come out. This is all a new experience to me.. I feel like a novice cat owner..

Tux and I are going to grow together, learn together and love together. `

Oh, artiemom artiemom , I am so happy for you. I had been hoping you'd adopt another cat to help heal your broken heart and fill the empty space in your home, and it sounds like adorable Tux is the one to do just that. He's certainly going to keep you busy.
Welcome to TCS Tux !!!! :bicolorcat:

I'm so glad you found a new kitty!!! Welcome home, Tux, you have an amazing new mama!

We feed our cats Wellness. We buy the big cans and put a cover on it in between meals.

And Lelia isn't really affected by catnip either, but she does love cat grass.

He greets me when I return! He runs to me..
Tux and I are going to grow together, learn together and love together.
I can't think of a better welcome than Tux running to be with you when you come home. :cheerleader: Yes, you will definitely grow, learn and love together. He is simply precious! :redheartpump: I can tell by the look in his eyes he is alert and intelligent too. I'm just so unbelievably happy for both of you. Can't wait to hear more about his daily antics especially his curious side with the shower and water. Best wishes for a long and happy life together. :heartshape:

yes. Tux is a handful!

The sofa is next to my recliner. I keep the tissue box there. Now, I keep the empty paper towel roll and an empty disposable water bottle next to it. Last night, Tux was in a kitty mood... first zoomies ever in here, for at least a half hour!!!!
When the zoomies were finished, he jumped on the sofa, went over to the plastic bottle, started crunching it..I said NO-- Stop it.. Then he went to the towel roll, Again, another No, Stop it.. Then I heard some more crunching-- the tissue box.. again, No, Stop it... then I heard some more rustling.. looked over and there was Tux, sitting towards me with his entire head in the tissue box!! It was so funny!! I wish I had my phone next to me to take a picture! Crazy cat.. not even a word from him.. I just pulled it off and he walked away!

He is really keeping me on my toes...

Even though you wanted a different cat, the Cat Distribution System obviously thought otherwise, by matching you up with Tux, before he even went into the general adoption area.

Just curious, though, about the other cat. How old was it? What colour fur? I purposely went for a non-orange cat this time, so just wondering if you did too.

So funny - after my Cheech I desperately wanted an orange boy - I've got a gray,3 silver tabbies and a tortie - lol :dunno: Guess there was only room for one orange boy in my life❤

Congratulations on finding each other.

Just crossed my thoughts when you mentioned the recliner. Does Tux know about recliners? Have you thought of bracing it so it can't fold down on him while he discovers his new world? I find recliners more terrifying than rocking chairs, so maybe I'm a little paranoid.

Oh, artiemom artiemom and Tux, conCATulations are in order! I, too, have been praying for a cat to come into your life. Tux sounds a LOT like Fluffy in personality and...yeah, they're both fluffy! Fluff uses his box at different times -- he prefers one of the 2 very high-sided boxes (not made any more, I guess -- I looked it up. Too bad, because they're excellent boxes for cats who "stand and deliver"!) and makes an unholy racket banging around in there to cover, clean his paws, etc. I've cleaned and put away a couple of the boxes I had around, and now he has a choice of 4, not 6. But he always uses this one in the master bath. He is very hyper, brash, and like a one-kitten wrecking crew. He jumps with abandon, leaps before he looks, pushes things off of surfaces and repeat "offends" -- we're working on this. He's "about 2" but VERY much a kitten in his behavior -- in fact, he sounds and acts like a squirrel monkey, so that's one of his nicknames. He's very good about his box. No problem there. And he's absolutely a lover. No biting or scratching, ever; he's very chill when I clip his claws, loves the comb and brush. I know he's bored, because he is a TNR ex-colony cat and lived in his foster home for 3 mos with 8 others, a dog, his fosterer and her son. I am hoping to adopt another cat (wish it could be more, but the economy being what it is, I can't) soon. I am still mourning my loss of my beloved Elvis; and I know Fluff misses him so much, too. He emulated Elvis and loved him.
Your little man is adorable -- of course!!! -- and we can probably swap stories of our unruly kids, yes?

The other cat I wanted was Tucker: a huge (15 lb) grey, very mellow, 2 year old. I lost out because I have an apartment, and due to his size he needed more space. I really fell in love with him and was devastated when I lost out. Tucker went to a couple who live in a house. They work split shifts so someone is usually home. They also plan on adopting another cat to keep him company.....sigh

But Tux is here.. Yeah, The Cat Distribution Center works in strange ways. I was really unsure of him, but the Volunteer, really pushed him on me.. so much, that I automatically agreed to taking him.

I have been more active with Tux, than I have been in years. With Geoffrey, I had a routine. This is a new routine and a lot more work! Tux played for 20 minutes when I got up, ate, was fresh--- very fresh with biting and scratching. Nothing seemed to stop him.. I hope he grows out of it.. just waiting for the Feliway to come in. It is cheaper on Chewy.

Yes, I am aware of the hazards of recliners. I always look to see where he is, before I close it down.

Tux's 'spot' is on top of the Air Conditioner. While that is fine during the warmer weather; in the winter it is really cold, no matter how much I try to insulate it. He may have to find a different spot. I would like him to use the carrier, but....

This morning. I put him on the cat tree: He stayed but was eating the rug off of it!! dAM cat... a real handful...
Would not allow me to brush him.. Again, up at 3 AM-- wanting to play! He is now after the blinds in my room-- cord and chain to bat around in the dark. I am trying to find a way to hide that from him, but he is into everything... I may just keep one window blind in the living room, open tonight so he can look out.

Need to find some type of interactive toy/puzzle for him. He is too smart and seems bored. Still follows me to each room I go into and sleeps in the same room. I do not know what he does at night... but I do find balls and the spring toy all over the place.. still missing 2 balls!!

Tux sounds A LOT like Fluffy. Feliway may be a big help. It always has been for me, in different situations. I've never used it specifically for an unruly kitten, but...it's certainly worth trying!
I wrap some of my miniblind cords around the top of the blind itself, as they don't get adjusted much by me. Also, I have almost all of them raised about 8" so cats can look out *and not mess up the blinds*...this has always worked really well for me since, 2 locations ago, I wasn't doing this and the blinds were absolutely thrashed *you probably know the look*:sigh: Living with cats *and especially kittens!* is an ongoing learning experience. You're right! A challenge, a labor of love.
I had a similar experience in adopting Fluff. I wanted a mature, spayed, healthy adult female, looked at the ones they had at the time at the rescue I wanted to adopt from, and asked about all of them. None of them fit the profile exactly and those who did were "foster fails." The adoption counselor asked if I would consider a male cat. I wasn't really thinking so, because Elvis loved his ladies so I wanted a female cat for him. But Fluffy was recommended as "a lover" and he truly is. Right from the start. There were absolutely no problems between him and Elvis. He spent one night in the "intro room" just to be sure, and after that, they were together.
Do you know about the puzzle box toys for cats? You can put toys or treats (or both) in them and young, energetic cats often love these. I've never been much on the battery-operated hard plastic toys of any kind -- they seem to generate initial interest and then get ignored. Cats by nature love small, soft things, anyway, and so do I. So I change out the soft toy assortment, use catnip spray on them, and do interactive play with the lure toys (da Bird and the rainbow snake are faves).

We had good luck with this toy for Neely, she loved it and then after she passed Carleton was fascinated by it:
https://www.rover.com/blog/fling-string-cat-toy-review/

Tux makes me laugh but not necessarily at 3 a.m. ;)
We've had 2 of those. They were moderately PAWpular. But both times, a certain "copper top" battery leaked in them and so, no more toys. :disappointed: *I've never bought "those" batteries since!*
