Hi all,

3 weeks ago we adopted an 8 mo old cat named Ginger. We have a 1y 8mo cat at home named Igor. We kept her in a separate room, and followed Jackson Galaxy's suggestion on feeding them at the same time, scent swapping, shared play time.

We recently let the two cats meet, and it seems like Igor is scaring Ginger a lot. He usually just try to get near her and she would run away. Ginger is easily scared and it did take her a while to warm up to us. So we can't really tell what Igor would do if he actually got close to her. Now when we let them meet, they would just stare at each other and kept their distance (no hissing, no puffing, they both seemed relaxed). Anytime Igor gets anywhere near her, she would run away. When we left the door open, Ginger tries to leave her room, Igor would run up to her, causing her to be scared and run back to hide in her room.

We can tell that she is extremely bored to just be in her room, when she could be exploring the entire house :( Would it be fine to just leave the door open without always being there to watch them? Or should we still only let them interact under supervision? We're so, so scared that if we're not watching, they could end up fighting. What do you think? It would be great to hear what everyone else thinks. Thank you in advance for any advice and suggestions!

Hi! Welcome!!
If you haven't already, try leaving the door open while you'll be home for a long time, for example on the weekend. It might take a while so you may need to be patient, but they'll have to be together so they can begin to work things out. If you can see how they interact, that will help you to know if things will be ok to leave them together while you're away.

I agree with Furballsmom Furballsmom , to let them have more "together" time when someone is home to see how it goes. Since there's no hissing or puffing up of fur, and both seem relaxed, it sounds like things are going really well. It's fur flying, bloodshed, or one cat really seeming scared, or stressed to the point of not eating or having litter box issues, that you need to worry about.

They could eventually get into tussles that look like fighting. In case that happens, here's a TCS article to help you determine Are My Cats Fighting Or Playing? – Cat Articles
