I am a new rescue cat owner. I am interested in putting a cat door in an interior wall next to the attached garage.

I am not sure if this is possible as there will be a few inches of space in between the two walls. Does anyone have a solution?

Among 100 other things. You build a wooden frame that's the thickness of both walls.
Think of a door, or window facing.
Basically, what you're doing is building a tiny window facing, without any of the fancy trim work around it.
HOWEVER, most pet doors come with a wall insert that covers the gap. And if the gap is too large, they should have an extension available. But probably have to be purchased separately.
Just google "pet door extension kit" and that'll give you an idea of.....stuff

I’m not sure if I can. It’s a steel door to the garage.
Then, check out the link I gave you to see if that might work. The video shows going through a concrete wall, but if your interior wall is wallboard, an adjustment or two could be made to the concept to make it work (and be a bit easier, actually).

You can put a pet door in a steel door. We have a steel entrance door to our garage and we put a pet door in it. Works great.
