I've been concerned that my 11yr old Mitzi isn't eating enough, she's 7kgs and usually just eats at most, 2 x 85gr cans (3oz)
along with maybe a tblsp of dry food which is always available
on the weruva guide it says 1oz per lb weight, this seems excessive to me
( I,myself am 140lbs and could not eat 140oz of food daily, lol )
anyway, she's healthy, pees and poops regularly
what do you think? how much do your cats eat?

Hi. The right amount of food is whatever is right for that cat. If Mitzi is not losing or gaining weight, then what she eats is the right amount for her. Especially, if she is not asking for more. I've found many people say their cats could not possibly eat some of the recommended amounts.

It really comes down to calories, on average a cat needs roughly 20 calories per pound, so rather then how many oz you need to look at calories. To figure out calories you need to look at the food quality as well as as activity level of the cat. Often times better quality food (with the calories mostly coming from animal protein and fats instead of carbs) the cat needs less to get all it needs, as well as a less active large cat may need less calories then a more active but smaller cat. I agree with the above posters.

As long as your cat is eating and not rejecting food and is healthy and having regular toileting, I won't worry that much.

Labels on the cans are just a guide. You need not follow them. Just follow the call of your cat's stomach. All cats are different, some are very active and some are not and some eat more and some eat less.

My boy is coming to 9 years old soon. I don't free feed him. I feed him whenever he's hungry and let him eat as much as he wants to eat at one sitting and once he's full, he'll stop. He's strictly on wet food.

thanks for the replies, I'm a worrywart when it comes to Mitzi, especially since she was sick awhile ago, I wasted lots of food but she does eat a variety of brands, since coming to this site I've been splitting cans/pouches in half as she seems to prefer grazing small amounts thru' the day and she will eat half a can overnight as well as a bit of dry food ...

I found many new flavours on here for her to try, she loves the pro plan beef &carrots which was on special on Amazon.
I also bought egg yolk powder and give her just a tiny pinch over a meal once a day to aid with hairball and digestion,
so many good tips from cluey ppl, thanks again folks :)

well, I gave her a full pouch of Hills SD ocean fish at 8am and she ate the lot, (new food for her)
then at noon she seemed hungry so gave her half can of FF chicken pate, all gone ( another new one) plus her usual tube treat ...
now 6.40pm and she just had half can of FF salmon savoury centres,
guess she prefers more variety than what's been on offer,
I'm much relieved right now :)
she'll be having turkey for supper before I go to bed
