Hey folks,
I have had cats (and dogs early on) around since I was a kid (over 60yrs ago :D). However, I just adopted a farm rescue kitten last year, after a 6yr hiatus from cat care. And I realized that this is the first time in my life that I've been raising a cat myself. Always had family around to share the responsibility before. Well, the kids are grown/gone with their own families, and the wife passed many years ago. So, I figured it couldn't hurt to join a cat forum (there are forums for everything now) to get advice, and maybe return some if I have any. My little friends name is Viffer, after my favorite motorcycle.
Still a kitten in this pic.

I may have already made this intro post too long, so I'll close it here. Thanx for reading.

Hi and welcome! Viffer is gorgeous.

I'm not sure there's such a thing as "too long" here when it comes to posts of cat pics!

I'm in a similar position to you - sixty, grew up with cats, but am alone for the first time in my life, so caring for my two falls solely to me for the first time (or at least since the last few years when my mother was no longer able to do any caring).

Oh, and I have a long one

I took care of a sweet loving stray outside. One day she was very excited about something. She kept rubbing against me and meowing. Then, 2 kittens popped out from the bushes. A few days later I could tell the mama cat was very upset about something. Someone had taken one of her kittens-CoCo. The brother got adopted and a rescue took the mama cat and her second litter of 4. A year later CoCo showed up on my porch 1 yr old. Soon after, she had a litter of 5 that were adopted. A friend helped me get TNR done on her and her bff, a male cat. She was outside for 2 yrs.A neighbor took the male cat and left CoCo alone. A few days later I took her in by grabbing by the scruff of the neck then she immediately started purring. First 3 months she lived under my couch. Now she will not leave my bedroom. I have had her a over a yr. I can see why some shelters do not want kittens adopted til they're 12 weeks old. CoCo does not defend herself when my cats hiss and growl at her. She does not hiss back or stand on her haunches. No reaction at all. Just quivers her tail and hides. I even took her to the vet to have her eyes and ears checked. She is fine. When I go to bed she rubs against my face and wraps her body around my neck. Then she kneads her paws and purrs for a long time. CoCo will eat next to my cats in my kitchen then back to the bedroom. Could be she does not know how to defend herself so she goes where she feel safe.. Hopefully by 2019 she will leave my bedroom on her own.

She no longer stays in my bedroom and sleep on the couch that Maggie's on. Still scared of her. Coco and Peaches play together. She will chase her!

Thanx for the kind responses folks.

My present goto bike (I have owned/own a #) is my VFR800. VFR => Viffer gave me the name :).

He was found on a farm in MO, and I picked him up from a friend there on my way home to AL from WI. He was about 5 weeks old then, weaned and eating wet food. We rode together in my car for about 9hrs. He was good with a little litter box and small food/water bowls in the back. Slept in my lap part of the trip. I did have to be careful not to let him down at my feet.

He's vaccinated, neutered, and chipped. I built a cat enclosure for him around my deck area and he has access in/out during the day. He can leave the enclosure thru a gate during the day as well, but I try to get him in at night (we have coyote, large hawks, critters). He hasn't tried to jump over the PVC pipe on the top deck rail yet, but I know he could. He wears a collar when outside with a GPS tracking unit on it (it's a breakaway collar, it works :D). Forum rules may not allow for brand names so I've left them out, but I'm sure they're well known here.

It took me long enough to take on one cat again, not sure I'm ready to get him a friend.

Hello and welcome to TCS. :wave2:
I think you'll find there's a great group of posters here, so maybe you'll come to consider us your internet family. :grouphug2:

Viffer is a total cutie pie. :catlove:

I may have already made this intro post too long, so I'll close it here.
If you're talking cats, you can never make a post too long, or include too many pictures. ;)

Welcome to you and to that handsome boy, Viffer. Love the way you got his name. LOL, I have a feral whose name is Wyffles. His name came about when I waited for him to "tell" me his name, calling him What's Your Face. He never did, hence WYFfles.

If you are new to forums, you hit the jackpot! I have been, in the past, to a good many forums. Then I ran across TCS, and abandoned the rest. This is the most welcoming, accepting forum I had ever found, and it quickly became my online home.
