I guess I'm just wondering, since this worked so well, why wouldn't you want to stay with this instead of switching things up regarding miralax, other quantities of lactulose, etc?
I am wondering this also.
Why are you wanting to continue with megadoses of lactulose, knowing full well; that it does contribute to elevated calcium levels? When you can just do a lower dose of lactulose, daily, with miralax added in the food? and the other drugs...which I am not familiar with at all.

I do not understand.. Glad it is not just me.

hi furballsmom...

i was just thinking of switching things up... as in rare cases lactalose can cause the high calcium scoobie has... and that high calcium can make IBD worse :(

I am going to do another blood test on the 23rd... it will have been a month since scoobie started prednil... (a steroid that can sometimes bring high calcium down)... and look at the levels then... to see if there has been any improvement...

if not i will consider going back to miralax to see if that makes a difference to her levels... i will give it a lot of thought as ask the specialist before i do this.. as you said if i have the right dose of lactalose at the moment for scoobs... then why muck with it :)

Hi

I am only doing 4 - 6mls of lactalose a day now.. that amount made her go yesterday..
I am not doing them both at the same time as the "specialist" said not to... so I am only going by their suggestion..

The specialist is on annual leave till next week... however this is the specialist that also said lactalose does not cause high calcium - it was my new vet that thought it possibly could ..

When the specialist gets back I will inform her that I think she is wrong.. ask her to do some research into it.

Also if I go back to Miralax now and the results of the blood work next Friday come back a lot lower than it was.. (for the high calcium) I won't actually know if it was the Prenil (steriod) that worked.. or the Miralax. So I think I will just stay on the Lactalose till then.

Thanks for the nice thoughts you sent my way :)

do you feed your cat hard food or wet food? If he eats crunchy dry food you should try royal canin Feline Gastrointestinal Fiber Response dry cat food. It requires a prescription from your doctor. It works wonders for cats with megacolon/constipation. You can read through all the reviews on amazon.
My cat was recently diagnosed with idiopathic hypercalcemia (high calcium) He has been on 10mg fosamax once a week for about 5 weeks and his calcium is now normal. I cut him back to once every 10 days and we will see how he does

I can second what Tibble says. I have my cat on the Royal Canin Hairball formula (dry food) that is very high in fiber and it is helping her go. I was tempted to get a prescription for the gastrointestinal formula but thought I would try this first and it is working. You may want to try the gastro CANNED food and see if that helps. It might be worth a shot.

the Royal Canin Feline Gastrointestinal Fiber Response dry cat food is not just a high fiber food. It really works well for constipated megacolon cats. The other gastro foods wet or dry are not the same regardless of brand. It really is a miracle food for constipated and megacolon cats. There are hundreds of reviews on amazon, chewy, etc about how it saved their cats lives. You can literally read for hours on how it has helped.

If it works you will know within 2 or 3 days. Your cat will make gigantic SOFT poops. Some cats may be able to be weened off lactulose after a while, some may be able to be weened off cisapride after a while, and some can be weened off of both. Most vets recommend switching to a wet food only diet but for some reason this DRY food works well. It costs about 40-45.00 for 8.8 pounds

I gotta report back -- I picked the food up from the vet on Saturday morning and it's Sunday afternoon and she has ALREADY had a big bowel movement. This food is a miracle. I wish I had had it with my other cats who had constipation issues.
