My 12 month old cat's one year check up is coming up and we believe she is a Bengal mix, but with that said, I know Bengal cats are more prone to developing HCM than most other breeds so I am concerned, especially since I notice she breathes a little fast and has a slight wheeze sometimes after a lot of activity (which I know doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong, but still). Do they routinely screen for that at annual check ups, or is this something extra that I have to inquire about? Thanks.

I had a cat years ago who had HCM. It was discovered during a routine Vet checkup when the Vet discovered a heart murmur. This is the first indication that there may be an underlying heart problem. From there I was referred to a Vet cardiologist who did further tests and diagnostic workup and prescribed the treatment plan.

I would definitely call your Vet's attention to your cat's breathing issue so that he/she listens very carefully to your cat's heart for any signs of a murmur.
