I don't know how old he is, but he isn't young. He showed up at the farm around a year ago, clearly feral but hungry. He had an old injury to his face and at first, I couldn't get close enough because i thought it was his squinty eye but later realized that was the eye that couldn't close and the injury to the one that was stuck open with the pupil just a sliver. There is scarring along the face and eyelid. It must have happened a while ago.
His fur is browning from being in the sun in Florida but he's a black kitty. He has a lot of white hairs sprinkled throughout, so I'm guessing he's 10+ years old. In the last 6 months he now meets me at my truck every day at the farm, though stays 6 feet from he action. The other cats come and want rubs and hugs. I hold my hand out to him but know it would be a miracle if he came over.
When I feed the barn cats, he waits patiently for his bowl and I can get within arm's reach of him as long as he's eating. This is a big deal for a feral. Sometimes, barn activities, trucks, general noise, or hungry chickens cause him to flee, so I take his bowl and meow and he catches on fast to follow to the safe place (under the trailer, under my car, in the bushes...wherever away from the commotion, so he can finish his meal in peace.
I wish I could save them all, especially ones like Grandpa. But if I can't, at least I can let them know I care.
