I don't know how old he is, but he isn't young. He showed up at the farm around a year ago, clearly feral but hungry. He had an old injury to his face and at first, I couldn't get close enough because i thought it was his squinty eye but later realized that was the eye that couldn't close and the injury to the one that was stuck open with the pupil just a sliver. There is scarring along the face and eyelid. It must have happened a while ago.

His fur is browning from being in the sun in Florida but he's a black kitty. He has a lot of white hairs sprinkled throughout, so I'm guessing he's 10+ years old. In the last 6 months he now meets me at my truck every day at the farm, though stays 6 feet from he action. The other cats come and want rubs and hugs. I hold my hand out to him but know it would be a miracle if he came over.

When I feed the barn cats, he waits patiently for his bowl and I can get within arm's reach of him as long as he's eating. This is a big deal for a feral. Sometimes, barn activities, trucks, general noise, or hungry chickens cause him to flee, so I take his bowl and meow and he catches on fast to follow to the safe place (under the trailer, under my car, in the bushes...wherever away from the commotion, so he can finish his meal in peace.

I wish I could save them all, especially ones like Grandpa. But if I can't, at least I can let them know I care.

For taking care of Grandpa! :hearthrob::redheartpump:

My guess is Grandpa could be an abused cat. Usually an abused cat is afraid of almost anything as anything is a threat to him. I hope the injuries are healing.

Today when all the cats at the farm came to my truck at feeding time, I gave everyone their daily rubs and pets and Grandpa REALLY thought about coming over to my extended hand...but then he didn't. But then when I was feeding everyone he was so busy eating dry food he didn't care that I filled the other side of his bowl with yummy wet food. He was 2 inches from me, like any cat eating from a bowl. which is a HUGE deal for a 100% feral wild kitty! He's so sweet. I hope he knows I care!

I think he knows that you care for him and I also think that he is slowly gaining trust in you but just be cautious. Eating 2 inches from you is really a good sign.

Today when I was putting Grandpa's bowl down in front of him (he was very close!), he must have been extra hungry and walked forward just as I was placing the bowl down and I inadvertently booped his nose! I am positive I was the first to ever boop his snoot! He was taken aback for a moment but I backed off and he smelled the food and was busy in no time.

I think he has the potential to become more socialized but it would take a very long time like it did with my 20 yr old former feral. It took me 8 years to touch him and it was only because he was injured and needed help that he let me.
