Grain Free, Pea Free, White Potato Free Dry Food?

My boy has significant allergies plus IBD and stage 2 CKD. I've been feeding Orijen as a dry food but it smells a bit rancid for lack of a better description. This is the second bag that I've noticed this pungent sharp odor. I purchased one from Chewy the other Petco. He eats a wet diet of baked turkey or chicken with water.He really needs a dry for nutrition since he won't eat the chicken/turkey with a completer or topper. This combination of foods has worked for nearly 6 years but I'm exasperated trying to find a dry without all the above ingredients and a phosphorus level below 1.

I just had a look (cats.com) at the Orijen food. No wonder it smells; herring, sardines, fish oils. I eat smoked herring snacks and as soon as I open the can you can smell it thru the house . Orijen ingredients list peas and beans as being in there, so your guy can handle some, right?
I can't offer a solid answer, but you may check out cats.com if not familiar with the site already. Whether you would trust their reviews or not, they have a large number of dry cat foods listed in one spot, and you can research the brand/ingredients from there. At least, that's how I do it.

Yes you're right he can tolerate very small amounts. But I truly did not even consider the smell is just the ingredients. He does eat the original so I'm going to calm down a bit.

You might look into Dr. Elsey's dry foods, which are on that cats.com list. Dr. E's foods are low-carb and low-to-moderate (around 1% dry matter) in phosphorus. Some people object to the pork ingredients but both the chicken-based and duck-based foods work really well for our cats. There are no vegetable fillers (some recipes were recently changed to eliminate chickpeas) and no ingredients like tapioca. These are the only dry foods I'd feed to our cats, one of whom went on strike last year because she didn't want to eat wet food all the time.
