Give him time to get used to the medicine. Pred is a strong drug. And lots of pred is going to throw him for a loop until his body adapts. Part of that adaptation is turning down the production of his own steroids. Do not off-road of freestyle the pred dose because that can hurt him if he is adapting or adapted to what he was getting. Whatever you are hearing from unlicensed non-veterinarians simply write it down and run it past Dr B. He’s the professional. They are not. A professional would never prescribe a treatment plan or a dosing schedule of a cat they have not personally examined and reviewed the case history.

PROBABLY (I am also an unlicensed nonprofessional) the rationale behind a high dose of pred is to knock it down quickly and then taper the dose quickly too. I don’t have an issue with a high dose of steroids. I do have an issue with leaving it high. It should be tapered to something more manageable for the long-term and let chemo do the heavy lifting. Chlorambucil is a safer drug for the long-term (in my nonprofessional opinion!)

For now, Geoffrey just needs a week or two to get used to this drug and the dose. If you think he’s not eating or drinking enough, call the vet.

In the short term, write down your questions and concerns with pred and the dose and whether there is a plan to reduce the dose to something more manageable. Do not change the dose yourself.

In the medium to long-term, pick up a baby scale and start weighing him no more often than weekly. In the absence of any other symptoms and sometimes pred and chemo cover them up well, his ability to maintain or even regain lost weight will be one of the biggest predictors of how well the SCL is being controlled. If he can maintain or gain weight, you’re not doing so bad. Of course that depends on adequate intake and absorption of nutrition. So anything that interferes with that (nausea, anorexia, butt or gut symptoms) should be discussed and worked out with your team—not strangers/nonprofessionals on the Internet.

This is the baby scale I used with Krista and use now with Betty. I place a towel in the basket because I have found Betty (and probably most cats) don’t like the feel of claws on plastic. There’s nothing for them to grip if they are feeling stressed. But the most important thing, especially with Betty, is to make the cat want to sit in the basket for a moment or two. A treat or in Betty’s case, a few pieces of kibble should be enough to distract him long enough if you need to pull the rest of him on to the scale. If Geoffrey has any no-no (IBD trigger) foods, use freeze dried meat treats in a protein he can have. Search the dog treats section if you need to. As long as the freeze dried meat is the only ingredient, it doesn’t matter whether it says cat or dog treat on the label. Rabbit is rabbit.

Thirded! I was the same as you, overwhelmed w/ the high dose, gobsmacked by the disease itself. Yet Zorro is still here as well! I can’t say for how long, as truthfully we are nearing ‘that time’ the vets seem to suggest a cat lasts w/ SCL, but every day is precious and a miracle and a treat, and although at the moment he won’t POOP, he is otherwise fine for a 17 going on 18 year old. There is only so much info you can absorb at once anyway. Best to breathe, take it a day at a time: all you can do is your best, and just the love you are giving him is hugely important. You are a good cat owner. :hearthrob:
17-18 years is such a huge blessing. Maybe ask the vet about a low dose Miralax if he continues to have problems? I've used it with my older cats in the past and it seems to be effective without causing cramps or discomfort. It does seem to take a day or two to take effect.
I have had three cancer diagnosis's in my pets in the past 10 months and have lost two of them. It drains your energy and makes you question everything you've done or didn't do, and it's agonizing. Sometimes our first reaction is to blame ourselves. It's amazing how our lives change. When my dog seemed healthy and happy with some odd symptoms a year or so ago, we were visiting the vet often but I went about business as usual. When the diagnosis hit and I realized what we were dealing with it's like my life changed so dramatically I can't even put it into words. I don't sleep well and I don't eat right. It has progressed a lot in the past month, but we're working hard to keep him as happy as can be for as long as we can. You and Artie's Mom and others here who are going through probably know what I'm talking about when I say when they're having a bad day, we're having a bad day. They don't act right and we decide we need to wash dishes..... after 3 hours of doing very little but worrying. 20 minutes later we have rinsed out a single drinking glass and realize we've been staring at a wall for the rest of that time. Well, OK, house cleaning doesn't help, so let's sit down and read a book and calm ourselves down. Then you realize you've been re-reading the same page for 15 minutes but have no idea what you just read because your brain just will not shut up.
But when they wake up bright eyed, eat a big meal, and are acting 100% normal suddenly we're Superman or Superwoman and have boatloads of energy and need to grocery shop, clean house, save the world and do all this other stuff we've been putting off. It's absolutely exhausting and this entire thread really spoke to me. I really feel for others who are going (or have gone) through this.

:yeah: I couldn't agree more with this advice. :agree: We all tend to discuss our pet's health issues with friends or others who have had a similar experience. However, you know and trust Dr. B. He is an exceptionally knowledgeable veterinary specialist who helped Artie and will help Geoffrey too. You have a lot on your plate right now especially with the financial expenses so save all your energy to get through this with Geoffie. We will be here for support. :grouphug:

Thanks for the Miralax advice I am rushing in the AM to get some as the lad still won’t poop! (my vet said this too). Do you give it once a day or as needed?

Double check with your vet (weight, etc.) but I think we did the minimum dosage our vet recommended twice a day. I don't remember what the dosage was though!

I think, the initial dose on Miralax is 1/8 tsp once and if not helping increase to twice a day. I remember Artie was up to 1/4 tsp twice a day--but that was motility issues, Megacolon.

Thank you everyone for your support. I really needed it. Yesterday, I did take a break from stuff, to practice Bocce with one of the members of my team. It felt good to clear my mind. When I came back home. Geoffrey was still lethargic, but perked up after his 2nd dose of steroid. He also perked up with his food intake. He ate normally overnight.

This morning, he is still not interested in playing. He was, however, intently interested in watching birds, and people..
He did not come over for his wet food. I had to bring it over to him, while he was on my bed. But he ate all of it.

daftcat75 daftcat75 Thank you.. I have Artie's scale in storage. I am going to have to pull it out.

I am going to take a break from the other group. While they seem to be knowledgable, I just get a 'put-off' feeling from them. They seem so judgmental, and unbending-- have too many protocols for membership. Too rigid. To me, at this point in my life, they seem to be; not as much supportive, but more diagnostic, and prescribing.

When I am flat out told that Geoffrey should have had an US and full GI blood panel Before the endoscopy; and that the biopsy should have gone through a PARR test, for staging.. I am at a loss. It gets you doubting things.
His diagnosis is: T-cell lymphoma, small cell Level-2. For me, that seems clear cut.. but not to them.

I challenged them a bit.. because they are insisting on all records!! I tried to post as a picture.. not good enough for them! They need the actual pdf file posted... I only know a tiny bit of computer stuff. At this point, my mind is boggled and I cannot follow instructions; especially someone telling me what to do, with my computer. They do not even know what type of laptop I have.

I really got put off by them. So I challenged them. I got an immediate response that I can leave the group at any time.

There really is no better forum/ group of people as we have here, in The CatSite..
Thank you all..

*Big hugs, Cindy!* You're right -- it's SO much to have to learn and think about and feel. You've gotten a lot of wonderful thoughts and suggestions here -- TCS is the best! As to the PDF, IDK if daftcat75 daftcat75 wants to weigh in on that, but I do know he's an IT wizard so...
I could tell you, too, but he's probably a lot better at streamlining the info so it's easy to follow. What I sometimes do with complicated instructions is to write them down so I can refer to them as I go. My office may look like the set of "A Beautiful Mind" but it makes sense to me to have a hard copy to refer to. I love having shredding parties later on. ;)
Of course, we are all here for finite periods of time and we want the best health, comfort, and quality of life for ourselves and our loved ones. NO ONE knows how long any of us have. For me, QUALITY is key, not quantity. I hope it will be as daftcat said in his opening paragraph, and that the steroid dose will be tapered. I would definitely write down all of your questions and concerns for Dr. B. Hopefully he will be able to explain things so as to put your mind at (more) ease.
SNORGLES on Geoffrey from me! It's not surprising that he has you wrapped around his tail. They do that.

They aren’t vet professionals. They don’t need his records. If you don’t trust your team, find a new team. Same with the team(s) you aren’t paying for.

Absolutely write all questions and concerns down. Especially if there are many as it's really, really easy to forget a few when you're already stressed. I go to the vet with my list in hand so I don't forget to ask anything and it's helpful, and reassuring to myself because remembering everything is one less thing to stress over.

Honestly I would stay away from that other site.

There's absolutely no reason to stay there if they are going to act like d..ks.

Some sites don't seem to understand what people really need is compassion, empathy and a shoulder to cry on when things get tough.

I have not had a cat with lymphoma before, but do understand how hard it is when your best friend is unwell.

Yup, 1/8 tsp, once a day, says the vet. Thanks for letting me know it might take awhile to work, as otherwise I’d be like, hovering over him right now. I just dosed him. Praying to the poo gods.

Miralax will help with the next poop. But to get the current backlog (so to speak) cleared out, you'll probably need something a little stronger like egg yolk (or those Greenies that gave Betty the runs!) Once he's got that out, the Miralax will help with the next poops. Once the poops have been there awhile, they get hard and dried out and it's hard to re-moisturize them when added moisture simply gets reclaimed by the colon and the kidneys. Miralax binds moisture and carries it all the way through. But that's the next poop's Miralax. Besides the Greenies and egg yolk, laxatone (hairball gel) might help as it is has a mild laxative effect. Your vet will have bigger guns like lactulose.

And if this is a chronic problem, you may consider additional supplements besides the Miralax. Vitality Science is a good place to start.

THANKS SO MUCH. Just never, ever thought I’d get to this stage of the opposite happening, since he had the runs for so long. He’s pacing around and scratching the litter like he wants to go. The Greenies seem to not be helping at the moment, tho they were. I’ll try egg yolk. :hearthrob: :goodluck:

Also, just want to say, didn’t mean to Shanghai this thread: I know this is all about Geoffrey. On the other hand down the road, this might apply to him as well, so hopefully it’s all good.

Small update: he pooped! Just exactly as Daftcat said, little hard nodules, plus a small spatter. I dosed him w/ a teench of egg yolk, and continue to pray to the poop deities...sending good Chi to Geoffrey. (Over and out).

(I finally figured out what Purraise is!)

Margot, I'm so glad he finally went! It's quite a "relief" (groan!), I've done a lot of stake-outs at the litter box myself.
I also will repeat I didn't mean to Shanghi this thread too. It just feels so comforting knowing that others know exactly what we're feeling and going through. There's nothing worse than feeling alone in this.

I finally broke down tonight-- just now. ... I am praying that I can deal with this.. I am praying for strength, courage, knowledge, and love... I need love in my life.. I desperately need it.. I am getting frightened.. I am feeing alone--lonely... feeling that I am going to lose something/someone who is very important to me.. I guess all the emotions I suppressed at first, are finally hitting me ---is really hitting me-- and very hard.

I guess it is my being alone all my life; being so committed to my parents...especially my dad-which is partial, if not majorly involved in this--I devoted most ofmy life to my mom and especially to my dad.. missed out on so many things. I still feel as if Lost Artie too early__ I did not have enough time with my 'soul-kittie".

Now, Geooffey is younger but with a worse diagnosis..and is totally avoiding me,, He is not my at.. He is hiding.. I am really feeling the loss. I miss my little boy... I miss cuddling.. I miss taking to him.. I miss the LOVE..

I guess I miss love.. I need love in my life.. at my age.. What do I do?? The life span for small cell lymphoma is usually 2 years... OMG>. I will be too old to adopt another cat... I need some type of unconditional love in my life. I have been alone too long... and too lonely...
Ok.. really venting and feeling so down.. It is life.. but... it seems as if I have had so many bad things happening to me.. I need love-- unconditionally..

Geoffrey is running away from me.. I cannot cuddle.. not even close. He runs when I look at him..He is hiding under my bed.. not cuddling at all.. 3 days of this... Too much for me..
I cannot go near him, he runs... I feel horrible.

Dr B called me today--his day off. He was helping his secretary, who isn over whelmed with work. They are so busy..

Geoffrey's Prednisolone dose was wrong.. It was doubled the amount he should have been prescribed.. I do not know who is at fault---but I am kind of mad about this... "I" am the one who caught this.. I do thank the 'authoritative' forum for bringing this to my attention... .I think the double dose has caused a diabetic reaction. Geoffrey is hiding form me, lethargic, drinking tons of water. DR B told em to stop it until he feel better.. So no prednisolone tonight and all day tomorrow.

I have to send a reminder ring tomorrow for him to re-p[rescribe the Chlorambucil into capsule dose. I cannot give hi the prescribed dose, which is in chew treats.. I tried yesterday; getting it all over Geoffrey, me, the floor, my clothes... It was ridiculous..

The Capsule is 0.1 mg higher---meaning a new script.. dam... Dr B said that is ok--Geoffrey is a big cat---long, high, lanky, muscular..no fat to him.

Thank you for listening..
I hope I may, by posting all of this: my feelings, Geoffrey's responses , helps others...I am not selfish.. so I do not want to take advantage of this forum--which I love...

thank you..

And I apologize for typos.. I am not proof reading things..
