At first I couldn't see the tips of Peter's ears but at second glance I spotted them. Glad he got some yard time and I'm sure he enjoyed his nightly salad. 🥗

He was actually on top of his bed!!! Dried leaves are apparently yummy.

Peter is sneezy. I noticed him sneeze the other day and he sneezed twice this evening. Not a good thing, rabbits aren't built to have runny noses. Luckily his nose isn't wet or running and his eyes aren't watery. He also already has a vet visit scheduled for Thursday. He was supposed to get the RHDV2 vaccine but that seems unlikely right now. As to his sneezing, it could be the first sign of a URI or it could be tooth problems. Which could mean that his prior treatment was incorrect and he has a respiratory infection starting before that was misdiagnosed, or his tooth problem was right but bacterial migrated to his airway during surgery, or it's completely unrelated and he is an old man who got sick just because, or his tooth treatment wasn't successful and he needs more treatment. I will hopefully find out Thursday.

On my way home with a very indignet rabbit. I was right, Peters first dental was poorly done. He still has an infection in his mouth and he's been swallowing it (evidenced by sneezing). He's going back on antibiotics and pain medications. Next week, he will have another surgery for another dental evaluation by a different vet. The vet I saw today said he thinks the best choice would be to pull the tooth because it feels like the root goes through the jaw bone. But he second vet next week is a specialist in rabbit dental issues and she will make the determination during the exam. She might be able to clean it out and clean up the first dental but the vet today thinks extraction is more likely. Rabbits do fine with extractions and he will likely just end up eating on one side.

He was able to get his RHDV2 vaccine today because he's eating well and it is important to protect him from the virus.

Peter when we got home, "I hate you, good bye!" As he ran under his bush. He did get a dose of pain medication which should help with any tooth pain and pain from the vaccine.

It's official, I am the worst human in the world. Peter really is not happy with the resumed medication cycle. Getting him for meds is stressful, involving a lot of herding and eventually grabbing. He tends to grunt and growl the whole time which is utterly adorable and heartbreaking all at the same time. Once I have him, he's pretty good about taking his meds but the getting sucks. I remember his first surgery way back, he was amazing with the meds. But he's stronger now and even sickie he is more sure of himself then he used to be.

Unfortunately, he nibbled both the sacraficial raspberry bushes to nubs. So what is a bunny mom to do but turn her potted raspberry bush into a sacraficial bush for the little sick boy. In the photos he is eating some leaves that fell off in the move. It's the darker green one in the clay pot, I'm actually more worried he will eat the pot right now.....

And yes, Peter has some fur tufts all over. He stress shed spectacularly during his vet appointment. The vet really wasn't gentle and Peter isn't used to being handled. Right now with the meds Peter is way too jumpy to let me groom out the tufts. I am going outside as often as I can and am enlisting my niece to as well so he isn't completely jumpy all the time. Hopefully he will settle into the routine.

It took four shops but I found someone with more raspberry plants in stock. I grabbed two more but I am seriously considering going back to get more to have them on hand. He's still recovering from his vaccine and looking rough so I an debating if I should syringe him or not. Peter is not eating enough to make me happy but he is eating his plant fairly frequently and eating grass somewhat. I know he feels icky and some eating will keep his system working so I am not sure if it's worth the stress of syringe feedings right now.

Prayers for Peters surgery tomorrow are appreciated. He will get dropped off at 8:30am and be there all day. I am hopeful this will be more successful, I already got an email from his new vet regarding his blood work and that they are hoping to have antibiotic beads to pack the abcess with.

Gross and more details on rabbit abcesses, they are slightly different then cats .....

"Abscesses are a common problem for rabbits. They can present as an abnormal swelling or as an open draining infection for example from their tear ducts.

These are usually related to tooth root abscesses.

Usually the abnormal swelling is covered by a thick layer of skin and are full of dry, thick material resembling the appearance of cottage cheese. Rabbit abscesses do not respond well to lancing and draining in the same way as abscesses in cats and dogs.

Surgical removal of the entire abscess is often required. Unless the abscess is removed with its thick outer covering intact, recovery can be lengthy and may not be successful. Entire removal of an abscess can be problematic particularly in certain locations.

Many abscesses are caused by dental disease and these can often penetrate the bone meaning complete removal is not possible.

Long term antibiotics are often required along with analgesia for pain relief. In recurring cases, regular opening and curetting of the abscess to remove its contents can help for a limited time until the rabbit's quality of life is compromised."

Which really leaves it at a pitential of a bad outcome. I know the abcess itself was much smaller prior to his earlier surgery so there is a worry that the prior surgery did more damage then good. Since the rabbits body encapsulates abcesses, when his prior vet cut it open and didn't clean it out properly and/or didn't properly take care of the tooth causing the problem it came back bigger and could have spread. Rabbits bodies can do what's called seeding where the bacteria spread almost like cancer does and it overwhelms them. Hopefully the vet can remove it all tomorrow.

The vet mentioned antibiotic beads: "Some abscesses are too deep and painful to clean every day, or are inaccessible. Antibiotic impregnated polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) beads can be packed into the abscess cavity which is then sewn shut. The choice of antibiotics is not simple, as some do not work well with the beads and some may cause antibiotic associated diarrhoea if ingested by the rabbit. The beads are left there for anything up to a few months and provide a slow but continuous release of antibiotic as well as filling in the hole left by the abscess and preventing it being filled by newly formed pus." I really do hope the beads are in in time to pack the wound tomorrow. Otherwise, we are probably looking at another surgery in a few weeks to add them in. Although if they can get it all tomorrow and with the stronger antibiotics he is on, maybe we will be okay without them.

Poor little guy. I’ll be thinking of Peter today…and in the days ahead as he heals. :redheartpump: :vibes:

It’s just rotten that he has to go through this.

I got the call every pet parent dreads.

"It's bad......we can treat but it would only buy a few months and his quality of life would be poor...... if he was mine, I'd let him go."

His jaw was destroyed by the bacteria. They would have to remove all the teeth on one side. Bacteria was firmly in his lungs as well. In all likelihood he'd be on a cocktail of meds to manage the pain and infections along with needing additional surgeries as the remaining teeth broke down from the added strain until his body gave out in just a few months.

So I made the decision to not wake him up from surgery. I don't get to say goodbye but it would be selfish to wake him up in a strange place where he'd be scared just to say goodbye. That would be selfish and it is the least I can do to let him just rest. I loved him everyday in all the little ways and I hope he knew that.

Fly high Peter. You will be missed.

Oh I'm so sorry. Peter knows you love him. He will love you forever. You gave him an incredible life full of love, friendship and the very best of care. He will wait for you at the bridge and I'm sure he will want to share his raspberries with you when you meet again. Peter meant a lot to many people. I know that I won't forget him. I will continue to think of him every time I see a bunny. RIP Peter. You will always be loved. The girls and I send you lots of hugs Kieka Kieka :hugs: :rbheart:

Oh, no. Oh, Peter. I’m so sorry, Kieka Kieka . Reading about Peter’s life with you made my days brighter. I’ll picture him hopping through fields of fruits and vegetables, pausing now and then to nibble raspberry leaves. Sending bunny wiggles and nose twitches. :alright:

I am so sorry for your loss. As I was reading along just now, I did not see this coming and hope that you can take comfort in all that you did to give him a wonderful life, including that oasis back yard that he was so lucky to live in with the cats. You made the right decision, I think, to let him go in peace despite how hard it was for you. I will always remember your search for raspberries for him and how happy they made him.

Oh, Kieka Kieka , I am so so sorry to read this. Hugs to you, who gave Peter the best home any bunny could have asked for. I've said it before, but he couldn't have hopped into a better yard, than when he hopped into yours. So often I would drool over the delicious produce you bought for him, and wished I could get such good quality fruit and veggies for myself. Whenever I see raspberries from now on, I'll think of Peter and the sacrificial raspberry bushes you bought him. I know your heart is breaking right now, but I hope knowing you couldn't have done anymore for Peter, will help lessen the pain. Thanks for sharing Peter's story with us. I really enjoyed learning all about bunny likes and dislikes. RIP dear Peter. :angel3:

We all know that you gave Peter the very best life a bunny could have. He was abandoned by the side of a road. You rescued him and devoted every day to making sure he was a very happy bunny.

His last day is one all of us who love an animal fears. But you were strong enough to spare Peter months of pain and fear.

Through your wonderful messages and pictures we know how much you love Peter. And Peter does too. Love doesn't stop with death.

Oh no, I don't know how I could have missed your thread but please know that my thoughts are with you Kieka Kieka . :hugs: Not only did you go above and beyond but you gave Peter the best possible life any bunny could have known. My heartfelt sympathies go out to you. RIP sweet, precious angel.
