For context, we picked mama cat 2.5 months ago when she’s pregnant and decided to keep her for the time being so that she can give birth in a safe place in our house and not outside the construction site which she was currently residing in.

Mama cat has been panting these few days and it coincidentally coincides with the dates for her kitties to get vaccinated so we brought the whole family together today to see the vet. We did blood test for her only as I know that xray is a very expensive option.. Looking at the test results, vet says she may have lung inflammation and she cannot truly determine the actual problem without doing xray. Mama cat has very low red blood cells and they mentioned she was anaemic. This comes the big problem. My sister doesn’t want to do the xray test as she is worried that there’ll be even more costs to come and she strongly rejected the idea and just wanted her to get her spayed and let the supposedly inflammation heal by itself. She thinks that by spaying, she will feel better and we are just making a big deal. My sister has just recovered from the big C and she tends to flare up easily if I do not do what she told me to do and I too do not want to antagonise her much.. Also, she might go to the extreme to even throw the cat back onto the streets (which she might really do it). We are co-parenting this cat but the decision lies in her mostly not me as I am unemployed with no savings left and my sister is the one giving me the expenses to take care of them all. We are given antibiotics at the moment to hopefully kill what’s hurting her and to observe her for a week. That is the best I can push my sister to agree on - initially she didn’t even want to do the blood test.

Is anyone in a situation like me before? I feel so incredibly bad I have no financial capability to care of the mama cat. If I am employed with savings I will definitely pay for her medical bills without blinking an eye. Even my parents cannot coax my sis into changing her mind. I feel so terribly sad for the mama cat. I need some advices on how I can deal with mama cat. Is there anything I can feed to make her feel better? Any food I can give to increase her blood cell count? I can only pray she’s in good health a week later..

HI. If your parents agree with you, then can they take care of the financial costs of pursuing mama cat's issues? You don't say whether you live with your sister and/or your parents. If you live with both, I sincerely think your sister is outnumbered and would hope your parents will back you.

What is supposed to happen after a week's worth of antibiotics? What is being done to determine she cleared the infection - just looking for her to look like she feels better? Will there be another round of blood work to look at her numbers?

I suppose, worst case scenario, is that you wait and see if the antibiotics work, follow up with another round of blood work, and if mama's numbers don't improve, you get your parents to support you in getting the x-ray done. Tbh, an x-ray could likely be less cost-wise than a full blood panel. Call the vet and find out what it would cost, just to see.

Hi. I do live with my sister. It’s exactly a week now and I don’t see any signs of improvement. She’s still panting away and it hurts my heart to see her meowing so loudly like in pain. I guess I will go to the vet again secretly myself with my parents..may I know if I will be seeing a very costly vet receipt if something really were to happen?

Yes, please take her to the vet asap. Panting is very concerning and she's obviously in pain, which requires immediate medical attention. I don't mean to scare you but she will die in pain otherwise. If you disclose where you are located, maybe someone close to you can give you an idea of veterinary costs in the area. You could also reach out to no-kill shelters/non-profit in your area for urgent help.

There is no way to know the cost - either from what tests that may need to be done or related to the area you are in, as costs vary widely. You could try to find a bit more out, by contacting vets or shelters - as noted above - and explaining to them what is going on, but not knowing exactly what she needs will give you little results in terms of cost - as most will tell you they just don't know what she needs until they see/examine her.

I so hope that you and your parents can follow through with getting her looked at - sooner rather than later.
