I didn't know that the ZD came in canned food. I will ask about that the next time we go to the vet. We are going to talk with the vet about a medication they can give her which is supposed to calm the stomach and maybe keep her from burping and throwing up.

I think we may consider changing vets. The last time we took her in a month ago, we asked them to do labs on her to check for potential problems before putting her on the ZD. When we picked her up they had not done the labs but put her on the ZD anyway. We were surprised since we asked them to do this to see what was going on. Obviously we have a vet clinic that does not really pay attention to all the symptoms that the patients are displaying. I am sure her teeth are a big part of the problem but not sure what to do about this. She is missing all her front teeth - has broken canines and some of her bottom teeth are missing. Never quite heard of kitty dentures... Anyway, maybe a new vet is now in order to see if other things can be done. Thanks for your comments and concern. She's a good kitty and well worth the trouble.

Just want to make sure you saw that Z/D unfortunately, does not come in a canned variety. I kept asking my vets hopefully
but it only comes in dry.

Something about the way the protiens are broken down in the Z/D, they can't do it in canned formula. Sorry.

You may have two problems which masquerade as one. My cat Kirsty used to throw up very regularly as well. All of the tests we did came back negative or inconclusive, but still she would vomit. I started to pay attention to the ingredients in the foods and through trial and error discovered that any food that had fish of any sort except tuna in, dried or wet, would come back up. She also had a problem with bad teeth and we would put her on antibiotics prior to having dental work done. She had less vomiting, less sensitivity to foods when she was on the antibiotics and after her dental work. As her teeth once again became bad, her vomiting would also increase. We ended up having to remove a number of her teeth even with the dental work, and she actually had less digestive problems when she only had a few teeth left than when she was younger and with more teeth.

I would definitely address the teeth issue and you may find that the vomiting either stops or decreases. If she still vomits after her teeth are taken care of, you may be able to identify a food allergen that is common in all of the foods she has eaten.

Good luck
Kathryn

Hello all,

I'm quite new to the forum but I could not help notice this post.
My cat Zara has something similar to this problem. I'm sure she's not aspiring to be a supermodel...

Even as a kitten she use to "hoover" her food and run. Then again she was a stray kitten and very tiny. This is still a problem after several changes in food, in addition to negative results at the vet. The only way I've combated this messy problem is watch her behavior. She tended to eat a LOT in one sitting and throw it up. I'm assuming its a legacy from being on the street and having a small stomach as there is no fur mixed in with the food. Hence the need to hoover and run.

The only thing that has worked so far is to get her to listen to my request for a break. I watch her eat and train her to take smaller portions then after a bit say "Zara, break please." Its gotten to the point where all i have to do is hear her hoovering the food and I don't have to be present and she'll listen.

So far its worked, she eats abit, and knows she can come back later. Its not so much of a problem and doesn't binge eat as much.

I hope this helps,
Rolo

I would agree with your assessment of a second opinion or to visit a vet specialist. My Bella was given 2 "clean bills of health" by the humane society recommended vet, and a month later she was in ICU for severe IBD.. She since has recovered nicely but fortunately I had found a very thorough and professional vet who was committed to find out the cause before prescribing treatment. Treatment in Bella's case was an extremely strict diet of wet/dry Hills w/d and surgery. But along with that he did a battery of tests - lab work and blood tests to pinpoint the problem. Nothing against my first vet, but they were just not as thorough.

Oh and by the way.. As posted upthread, I agree -- a kitty going #2 only 3-4x per week should be a cause for concern. Bella goes at least once per day, sometimes twice..
