Oh, no! Crossing fingers and lighting candles!

But...she is with us still, and there is hope.

It's cancer - pulmonary adenosquamous carcinoma. I'm heart broken.

So I brought her into my vet on 1/2. He noticed her breathing was odd - she was breathing in but her chest was going out. He did an X-ray which showed massive amounts of fluid in her lungs and what appeared to be a mass pressing into her lungs. He sent us to the ER where she was put on oxygen.

They looked at the x-rays and said it was likely cancer. They removed the fluid from her lungs and re-ran the X-ray and the mass disappeared. They tested the fluid and there was nothing in it that indicated any type of diagnosis.
...[CUT]...
Has anyone had a similar experience? I'm praying we can get a diagnosis so that we can start treatment asap.
I have currently a very similar experience.
During a visit for a special treatment, the vets discovered a small amount of fluid in my cat's chest and referred me to my regular vets.
These regular vets confirmed the presence of fluids in her chest and drained it completely, about 70 ml. The fluid was sent for analyses and came back clear.
At the ultrasound scan they saw a small mass between her lungs and they stated it was a lymph node and advised me to re-run all the test in a few weeks time.
So, after three weeks we did the same tests and scan and everything came back the same, the same lymph node and the same fluid, that was drained again.
So far my cat had 5 chest scans done, along with 5 drainages for a total of about 500 ml of fluid, two x-rays and a CT scan.
Every time the fluid has been tested, we had 5 cytologies, 2 cytofluorimetries and a PARR test. They all said it was an inflammation of unknown nature.
The CT scan was preceeded by an x-ray who showed a big mass right behind her sternum, but when the fluid was drained, the mass was gone.
Six weeks ago they saw that the lymph node was not visible anymore, so they ruled out a lymphoma, that was however already been ruled out by all tests.

I also took the cat to a feline specialist at a different clinic and to a IM professor at the Veterinary University. The professor was seen a week ago and he promised to give me an answer as soon as he reads all the reports I handed him.

What they have assessed so far is an atelectasis of the cranial lobes of both lungs. The reason why this happened is unknown and probably it will remain so.
They said that this atelectasis causes the lungs to rub against the rib cage and this cause the fluid to build up.

My cat has been put on diuretics of two kinds with little results, and then was put on prednisolone, and now we're reducing this too because we have found that the effect was null and we're going to discontinue it.

I have a thread on this issue
Fluid In Cat's Chest - Advice Needed

I am so sorry. Hugs to you and your beautiful kitty.

Healing and transforming God, your love knows no boundaries, and in your sight every life is precious; look with compassion on Zoe, and make us your agents of healing in a broken world.
Thank you so much for the beautiful prayers.

Oh, I didn't read all the thread and just replied to the first post!
I'm sorry, what did they say they can do now? Is any treatment possible?
I don' know. I'm waiting to hear back for oncology today.

I'm so frustrated. Zoe's surgeon said that oncology would be calling today. I finally called at 4:00 because I hadn't heard from them. Oncology said they weren't planning to call because they haven't seen her in person. But I can't get in to see them for 4 weeks! She won't make it that long without some sort of treatment. I left another message for her surgeon but haven't heard back and her internal medicine doc is out until Tuesday. My poor girl. I need answers quick but none of the doctors seem to care.

I've been researching her cancer diagnosis (pulmonary adenosquamous carcinoma and fibrosing pleuritis with carcinomatosis) and it's really really bad. I have lost all hope. This story is so very similar. Harpsie's website - cancer

It seems that vets not calling back is becoming so common all over the world.
Those people think they're god and like to be prayed for an answer

Do not lose your hope, never lose your hope, you are the only hope for Zoe, do not let her down.

Support her, help her eat if necessary, keep calling...drive them crazy. Make them KNOW that you don't think she will last 4 weeks, ask about other oncologists, and treasure every moment you have with her. We are here.

Thank you! It's so frustrating that there's no help on the weekend other than the ER which can't do much for her cancer. She's stopped using her hind legs so I'm extremely concerned. There's only one pet oncologist in my state which is why it's so hard to get in. I left a message at another clinic that does cancer care/chemo, but they don't have an actual oncologist, just an Internal Medicine doc that does the cancer treatment. So I'm a bit worried using them, but they may be our only hope at this point. Of course their IM doesn't work on the weekends. I'm hoping to get into them ASAP. From all I'm read, carcinomatosis doesn't respond well to chemo but maybe it'll help alleviate her symptoms. She is still eating and her breathing is fine as long as she's resting. But she really can't move much - just getting to the litter box 10 feet away takes her breath away. It's so painful to watch - I wish I could help her but keep hitting road blocks. Your prayers and support are appreciated!
