My boy has got the dreaded fleas. He has some bites/irritated skin around the head. If I can find some clear skin around the back of the neck is it still ok to use spot on? I know alot of these products say do not use on infected skin? But oral meds aren't as effective and the poor little bugger has a separate procedure (CT scan) booked for Thursday, so I could do with the fleas being wiped out before then...

Advantage is the safest topical. I would ask your Dvm about where to put it if it’s OK with whatever is going on with him. You could also just give him a bath with regular dish soap and vacuum and clean your house, etc.

Since you are going in on Thursday, you might just call the vet tomorrow and explain that you would like the fleas to be gone by the time that he comes in and ask what is safe to use. Last year in a flea emergency when my current treatment failed, the vet gave Rikki one Capstar which immediately begins to kill fleas but is not a monthly treatment. We followed up in a few days with Revolution.

Ask your vet if they have seen any trend in your area of flea treatments that are no longer working. In my area, Advantage and Frontline are completely ineffective and now it appears that Revolution is starting to fail as fleas develop a resistance to it.
