It's a truism that black cats are hard to photograph. Pantera is no different, but sometimes I get lucky. Like many black cats, Pantera's coat tends to bleach out a bit during the summer like a surfer. It doesn't help that Rio de Janeiro only has two seasons, Hot and Hell. As a result, sometimes under the right lighting you can see that Pantera has very faint tabby striping under the black. It's interesting that she has nearly no white on her, only a few hairs in her ears. Even her undercoat and roots are dark brown.

I finally managed to photograph Pantera with her striping almost visible. Normally, Pantera looks a uniform black under anything less than the direct noonday sun. The photo is low quality; it was taken directly in the noonday sun in a rush*, but the tabby striping is there. Interesting to note that Pantera has tiger striping, very different from Pimenta's classic/marble tabby striping

* the angle of the lighting sucks as does the resolution, but at least the colors are accurate :dunno:

My sister had a black cat that would be a different color at every angle and summer he would bleach out to a Burgandy/ Brown. We have been discussing film versus digital and how the digital gives a reasonable photo and film if you experienced will give you what you actually want.
Its annoying when you can see something like your cats tabby markings and the camera will just not show it..well done to finally get it though.
With Blue being silver the digital camera makes his coat absorb all colors around him so his coat is never his true color in the pics.
Inside with the beige carpet he goes beige...most annoying.

Lol, I was actually a professional photograher ( a photojournalist for two regional newspapers) in the mid-90s, well before the advent of digital photography. Yes, I guess that makes me an old fogey :flail:

There are pros and cons to both digital and film, but the basics don't change. My main gripe is that cellphones absolutely suck as cameras, but that is where most content comes from. To be fair, it's not all bad: one of the few positive things I can say about Apple is that their iPhones are very good at color accuracy.

Thank you! About the "Ghost Tabby" markings, the wife says that Pantera is really a tiger that only pretends to be a panther :dancingblackcat:

All cats carry the tabby gene, there are other genes in play that determine if their coat is solid or agouti ('barring' of the hair that is from alternate dark and light bands). Because the gene is present, even if appearing solid, they have tabby markings that can faintly be seen in certain conditions, 'ghosting'.

I saw somewhere on the internet- don't remember where- that it was called "ninja tabby". You don't see it, you only see black :chessirecat:
