Hello friends, I have an older male cat, that I have been battling Stomatitis with, he has had antibiotics, several rounds of steroids ( with mixed results , some giving relief for up to a month, or so, some no improvement ) I was advised full mouth extraction, and around first part of March relented, and took him in for surgery, vet said they were "better" condition than he thought once he did full exam under anesthesia, so he extracted 2 molars, and did full cleaning, and he recovered wonderfully , and was doing super , eating well, and even gained a bit of weight, but now, not even 3 months later he is , bad shape again, refusing to eat, crying, running from bowl, so I am going to try Plaque Off, and wondering if any that had a Stomatitis cat had positive results with it ? If it does not work, then I will be looking at another surgery, with possibly another vet ( the one I went with is extremely busy, and I think maybe he was in such a hurry that is why he only took 2 teeth, because girl told me they had 6 surgeries that morning, and do not want to put him through several surgeries to take all the teeth ) thanks for advice, and reading this !!!

Feline Stomatitis, and Plaque Off

I didnt find plaque off do much at all for my cats teeth (no stomatitis just crappy genetics) and I doubt it would help with stomatitis to be honest. I don't know why the vet didn't just pull all the back teeth then, even if they were not too bad. It always happens unless you do a ton of dental cleaning but generally even then cats end up having their teeth removed. Given your cat is older, you dont want to put him through alot of anesthesia so I would just remove all the back teeth. Then just keep brushing his front teeth if they are otherwise fine.

Thanks for reply, I know, I really do not like putting him through the trauma of going into surgery/anesthesia, etc I was hopeful the cleaning, and 2 he removed would give me indefinite resolution, I will have to choose another vet probably also, that WILL take the time to remove them all in next go, this vet that did surgery had told me he generally does not just take a few, and clean, since Stomatitis comes back, but that is what he did ....I really think he was in too much of a hurry, since they are overloaded with appts
I'd get a second opinion, just because... But, are you aware that stomatitis can be due to one of the main three viruses? There are cats whose issues aren't resolved by FME. While I am not sure there is anything that can definitely help, it might be worthwhile to put your cat on an immune support supplement, such as DMG. Maybe it won't do a thing to minimize the stomatitis, but it certainly cannot hurt.

Hi, thanks for response, I have read quite a bit, not sure what DMG is though ? I have read about Lysine too, and even some new immuno drug therapy , cannot recall name of it off hand, I took him to several vets, all said same, none of them wanted to try any long term drug therapy, all just have steroids, and/or antibiotic, and said that's it, he needs FME , but I actually spoke to a man in waiting room that had his cat with him to get steroid shot that he said she has to get every 6 weeks, and she had already had 2 surgeries , and had ALL teeth removed, so that is my fear too, there is a cat only vet hospital about an hour away, i thought about trying them, but kinda have been disheartened by several saying basically FME only long term treatment choice.
I am just curious how giving steroids routinely isn't considered long term and how that compares to some of the new immune therapy meds you've heard about.

Thank you I am going to look into getting that, and maybe Plaque off, and start trying to manage it at home, I guess the guy that was going in every 6 weeks, was being given steroids that often since the 2 surgeries did not give relief, which I would hate to do to my boy, the vets I have gone to have him steroids , and told me it would be temporary fix, and not something they would want to keep doing, I believe he has allergies, and I wonder also if it is not somehow tied into that, as it seems to "flare up" I might have a few good days, and then some bad, but it is hard to pinpoint what foods are triggering it, as I am usually so desperate to keep him eating, that I try very wide range of tempting foods, he still grooms himself, and is active, and plays, but eating is a nightmare

Interferon is drug I had read about , and I brought it up to last vet I had consult with because he mentioned he had extra training/interest in dental cases, and he shrugged it off, and said some things work a little temporarily, and then don't, and FME way to go, it does not help that I am in rural farm country, where few ppl even take their cats in for routine checks, and shots, I was reading that Interferon was showing promising results, I just need to find a place that is willing to try to do something, or I will start trying some of these things too , like the DMG

I'm thinking of having my vet do a full allergy blood test on my sweet boy to see if we're giving him foods that are contributing to the stomatitis? Has anyone else tried this and found success?
I've been focusing on strengthening his immune system, he's on a fresh pet food diet with each meal being a different protein- Rabbit, Lamb and Venison - no fish or poultry- I saw the inflammation in his mouth decrease when I took these out of his diet. I'm also going to start adding these supplements: Sustenance Herbs Pet-Riodontal for oral mouth health as well as their Immune Mushroom Blend.

I am going to check out that company, and those herbals you mentioned, I would like to do the allergy testing, but I think I will probably have to go to a cat only type specialist clinic, as all the other vets I have been to, do not have much interest in more in depth testing, what type/brand of rabbit /venison are you using ? I am in rural area, so have to drive about 40 miles to closest pet store that has a wide variety, but when I go , I may try to get a bunch to try , as I have heard a lot of cats have fish, and poultry allergies
Hello! My cat maybe in the early stages of stomatitis. She has started eating since I gave her adored beast feline gut sooth that's a pribiotic and supposed to help with inflammation. I am researching a lot to see if a probiotic can be given with dmg and the difference.

Hi, thank you for reply, my boy was doing better, and now has gotten terrible again, not eating, just had a couple extractions , and full dental cleaning a few months ago, and more , or less has done really well, until last week or so, I ordered some "Smarthealth" feline stomatitis formula, and just started it a couple days ago, I am going to order some of the Beast probiotic you mentioned, and start that too, hate to continue taking him back to vet constantly
Can't promise you the ab will help. Vetriscience dmg did get her to start eating. So far it has worked. Her food has been nulo turkey duck pate and fancy feast classics turkey&giblets pate

When I get back to pet store that has Nulo I will get some of that, I tried it before, and that cats loved it, getting him to continue to try and eat ANYTHING has been a challenge, he did have a little breakfast this morning, it is day 3 of Smarthealth probiotic, I think I will get the Vetriscience too , did you have any issue with your cat eating the DMG ?

I've been using Plaque Off on my one cat with stomatitis. He had 14 teeth removed, and the ones left we are struggling to keep. Plaque Off along with BestLlife4Pets Oral Health homeopathic pills crushed in his food 2x a day has kept his stomatitis pain under control. Before, he was still showing pain symptoms, grinding his teeth after eating (wet food) and occasionally yelping in pain. With consistent Plaque Off and the homeopathic supplement, the pain symptoms are gone, or very infrequent. The vet said, "Whatever you're doing, keep doing it."

I was in the hospital and had the pet resort give dmg twice a day. She has no trouble eating
I hope the Feline Gut Soothe will help! You might also try some slippery elm bark syrup. Our cat who had a tooth extracted because of stomatitis several years ago gets both Gut Soothe and slippery elm bark syrup, and they do seem to help. Though of course we can't be sure! Slippery elm bark is great for reducing inflammation and though Edwina has some gingivitis, the vet was surprised to see how good her throat looks -- apparently the throat can get very red with stomatitis. Gut Soothe does have some slippery elm bark in it but our vet approved our use of additional elm in the syrup (and another supplement, for that matter).

I forgot I did change Peaches menu when she was boarded. She. Now eats American journey beef chicken pate,fancy feast classics turkey&giblets pate,or hills prescription a/d pate. She no longer likes minced.

Hello, I was wondering what kind , or brand of slippery elm do you buy ? My Andy cat has taken a turn for the worse, and is going back to vet Wednesday, I am hoping he can give him something to get him eating, and then going to order some supplements, ( I was hoping to avoid another vet visit, and start different supplements, but he has gotten so bad, he only will eat a little once a day, and has recently skipped entire days, I was going to start syringe feeding him tonight, but managed to get him to eat a little bit ). I was undecided on trying the Gut soothe, or Vetriscience DMG, I do not want to try too many at once, so i will know if one is working versus another, i have had him on Smarthealth Stomatitis formula a couple weeks, and thought there was some improvement, but it was only a "good day" and he has been declining in last week .
