This is my first cat and I have to clean her ears twice a week. Is this something normal or is it more serious? Help!!

Are you sure your kitty doesn't have ear mites? They look like dark brown- blackish dirt in kitties ears. It would be a good idea to have a Vet check the kitty out because if it is ear mites you'll need some drops to get rid of them. Good luck

If you see black crud, that is not ear wax, that is dried blood from ear mites, and she needs a trip to the vet so he can clean her ears and give you some ottamite, or something. I hope you are not using q-tips, just use soft rolled cotton dipped in just a little bit of olive oil, barely enough to soak the cotton, and roll it down into her canal gently and bring it back up.

It is not a dry substance scattered around the ears, it is more like small balls of wax.
