Does my new kitten have a black smoke or fever coat?

Hello! We just adopted a sweet kitten, named him Gibb

He has a very interesting appearance, but we cannot tell if this is his real coat or a fever coat. He was rescued outside a grocery store a few days ago and is 3 months old. No idea what his parents looked like.

Hard to tell, looks like it could be a fever coat, but time will tell. He looks a bit tortie/ calico maybe but he is a male so prolly not. Lovely little guy

He looks like a smoke to me. Is his fur white down at the roots? If it is, he's most likely a smoke.

I hadn't checked the roots too closely while I was with him, but his mid-section and belly were definitely silver at the roots! I will investigate further once the shelter releases him to us on Friday!

Either way, Gibb is beautiful! I had no idea this was even a color they could be, I’ll be curious to see what others say once you get more pictures up.

It really is a beautiful color. We had a neighborhood cat, a black smoke, stop by our deck for a few times, and he was just gorgeous. Of course, he sent my two into yowling fits.

He does appear to be a black smoke longhair. He's a lovely kitten! Smoke / silver is a dominant gene, so one of his parents would have been either silver or smoke in color (or possibly white masking smoke / silver).

AWWWW! He is seriously one of the cutest cats I’ve ever seen. That expression!! Can’t wait to see more of him around here as he grows up!
