Just wanted to post a quick update. Ted has dropped down to one pill a day and he hasn't slipped up again. We've found a happy compromise where he's allowed to sleep with us but he's not given unsupervised access to our bedroom. This has been successful so far! We're going to keep him on the once daily dose for the foreseeable future. Once he runs out of the pills he has now (at least another month) we'll speak with our vet and see about tapering him off completely. It might be possible to do this successfully, but even if he needs to stay on the meds forever, I'll be happy as long as his behavior stays at the level it's at now.
For anyone who is considering anti-anxiety medication for their cat but is hesitant, take it from someone who was in your shoes and tried literally everything else over the course of YEARS before trying meds: it's worth a shot. You and your pet deserve to be happy and living harmoniously!
