Do not use cheristin for cats!!!!!!!!!

I used Cheristisn on my 14 year old cat. Her reaction was terrible. She became very lethargic, looking lost. She has been refusing to eat and and drink for the past couple of days. I could not figure out what was wrong since she had not reacted badly before (we used Cheristin twice before) until I read some of these posts. I had to take her to the vet. But I still don't know if she is going to recover.

I didn't like Cheristin at all because it left a greasy mess on all my cats for days. I highly recommend Revolution. You can get it without a prescription for a discount from this Australian retailer. I know at least a few of us use this site.

I thought I'd post an update on this thread. I have been using Cheristin for my multiple cats for years, swapping it back and forth with other treatments as FL fleas seem to build resistance to continued use of the same product. I'm sure I'd been using Cheristin continuously for about 18 months.
I have a 17 YO cat that I nearly lost when she got sick 24 hours after dosing her with Cheristin 8 days ago. She stopped eating (a HUGE change in behavior) and refused all food; reduced her water intake to a few small sips a day and otherwise spent all day sleeping in an unusual place for her. This continued for 4 days, but she gradually became more mobile and was taking more and more water. Now, 8 days later she's nearly back to normal but while frequently hungry she only eats small portions at a time. At first I was sure she'd eaten something poisonous (indoor/outdoor cat in FL) or her age suddenly caught up as we'd lost 2 cats in the same age range to other causes in the prior 4 months. The sudden onset of symptoms after the Cheristin stuck in my mind and I started research on any recall and found this site where other problems have been posted including at least one case where the symptoms were the same as for my cat.
On a related point on the same issue, I lost my most favorite 16-YO in February. There is no doubt she had terminal cancer that was very aggressive and un-treatable, but she wasn't showing any real signs of illness yet. Wanting to be sure she was comfortable, I treated her with Cheristin from that same Lot D070435. A day later she stopped eating suddenly and after 2 weeks of no food and 4 days refusing water as well, I had to have her put to sleep. Cheristin did not change the outcome here, but it's so disappointing that it probably accelerated the inevitable and deprived us of Angel's company for some period of time.
Having 2 cats suffer the same symptoms in the same time period after treatment with the same Lot of Cheristin doesn't seem like it could be a coincidence.

David, I agree!
I lost my cat to these poisons over five years ago. It also sickened my other cats. Of the two left, one of them has brain damage from this garbage.
I cannot believe it is still on the market!

I have all indoor cats and somehow recently I’m seeing fleas. I’m thinking we brought them in from working in our yard. I’ve started giving Advantage II to them but I notice some are still scratching. I didn’t have a chance to give the treatments all on the same day (cats don’t like it) but for some it’s been at least 6-7 days. I also vacuumed and sprayed rooms with flea spray. I’ve always used Advantage and were able to get rid of fleas we had last year….at a loss now why there’s still fleas

Our vet says you can bring the fleas in on your pants' legs and socks. You might want to spray a foot or so of flea spray regularly in front of your door. If you have privacy, you could take your trousers and shoes and socks off outside and put in a bin. Of put the shoes in the bin and flea spray and let sit for a couple of hours. You could put your clothes directly into the the wash.
We found that flea spraying the house, not the cats, with a mild flea spray, followed by vacuuming, both every day, did take care of the fleas, but it took about a month of doing this.

I keep forgetting to spray clothes, having fleas in the house is horrible. Is the flea spray you use toxic to the cats? Because I have so many indoor cats it’s hard to keep them out of some rooms until the spray dries…I vacuum before I spray, spray the room and then shut door for an hour, vacuum again…open windows and keep door shut again for at least 30-45 minutes. We have 7 rooms, 3 are open areas so it’s very time consuming…and difficult keeping cats out of treated rooms…

I have had the problem well under control since I last posted about this.
I do not use any chemicals, I use a flea comb.
That seems to do the trick.
You must do this often, at least a couple of times a week.
It doesn't cost much, only the price of a comb.
You pay with your time and effort.

This was back in the 70s. I had 8 cats. All the cats were adults and none were elderly. I used Adams flea spray, on the hardwood floors, under bookcases, under stuff chairs. The cats hated the smell and fled to the other half of the house, some went to the dirt basement which you could get to inside, as I sprayed one half. I didn't soak it down, just misted. Waited a little while, then moved to the other half of the house. It dried quickly, as it's alcohol based. The vet suggested it as the safest thing to use, but the formula may have changed over the years.* Check with your vet. When I walked into the other half of the house carrying the spray bottle the cats raced to the first half of the house. Same when I did the basement, which was dirt. Vacuumed the whole house every day. Did not vacuum the basement.
*At the time the vet suggested spraying the cats with it, there weren't any topicals then. We did this twice. Both times the cats felt the appropriate response was to spray the sofa. We did not do it again.
I also sprayed the floor of the closets and the shelves above the clothes. Leave the doors to the closets open unless you really want to smell like flea spray.
No, it wasn't the healthiest thing to do, but I got dozens of flea bites in the basement in a 2 minute visit, one cat almost died from anemia from the fleas and another had the flea allergy down her back.

I am so sorry that happened to your girl. That's awful. Thank you so so so much for warning us about this. I almost bought Cheristin for my cats.

My cat died within an hour of the time the vet put Cheristin flea medicine on his neck!

"Generally speaking, the FDA is responsible for approving animal drugs and regulates flea and tick products that are given orally, including pills, chews, and swallowable liquids, or by injection. EPA, with some exceptions, regulates those products that are applied to pets topically – to pets’ skin or fur. This includes shampoos, collars, dust or powder, sprays, and spot-on flea and tick products."
So the statement about it needing to be FDA approved isn't correct; and it won't be possible to find an "FDA approved" topical treatment.
Personal opinion - I am wary of using any topical treatment on a cat less than a year old. With my adult cats I am very careful when applying to ensure that it doesn't run to an area where the cat can lick. I also watch them for an hour for any grooming where they might ingest it from a paw.

My cat died within an hour of his 3rd treatment.. the first two had been 6months to a year apart, this 3rd that killed him was after he had been shaved of his undercoat for summer, and the vet put directly on his skin, I always got just some on him and he would get away, now I know why.. heartbreaking!
