Oh my god. My heart just SANK when I read the beginning of this. I am SO glad she survived, returned, and is recovering. Every cat person's worst nightmare. The cat gods must have been looking out for her. Please give her a kiss from me and a courteous greeting and well wishes from our Pawnee (who has since survived 6 months of treatment for histoplasmosis). She's running low on remaining lives too, I think... or perhaps it's a test of how much we love them. All the best to you and Soleil!

I have a feeling my cat may be affected by this. She's a very healthy 1 year old that runs on rocket fuel and she has big eyes like saucers. She constantly harasses our 8 year old at all hours of the day. She got her 1 year boosters and rabies on June 22. On June 30, I noticed her starting to act lethargic but still eating and drinking and using the litter box. Took her to the vet and she had a temp of 105.2. They gave her an antibiotic, painkiller and sub q fluids. Took her back the next day and fever was down to 103.5. Left her there over 4th of July weekend and fever broke and stayed normal after they took her off IV fluid. Her temp is still good and she's eating normally and drinking but still lethargic. They've run blood tests twice, urinalysis and ultrasound and all come back normal. She's still eating and drinking and her temp is normal since Sunday afternoon but she is still lethargic. I've spent $1K already and still don't have any answers. I'll be taking her to a specialist.
Wow!! I’m so glad I googled and found this site and thank you all for writing your experiences of delayed vaccine reactions. I’m going to keep this short as possible and to the point and hope it will benefit others who are wondering what could possibly be so wrong with their cats. Having read all your posts, this delayed reaction to vaccines is obviously what has happened to my lovely cat. I have a 10 years old rescued long haired Balinese called Luna. Very sensitive breed. I live in Canary Islands and she loves to go into the mountains so I decided sensible thing was to vaccinate to protect her. On 2nd February 2018 she was vaccinated with Purevax RCPCh FeLV. No immediate symptoms whatsoever. 14 days later on Friday 16th February she was lethargic and looked like she was having difficulty walking, examined her and found nothing. Saturday even more lethargic, arched back and worse limping, very disinterested in surroundings etc. Tried play string to see response levels - nothing! Sunday night extremely lethargic and not alert, spoke to vet and asked if possible vaccine reaction - she said no. Monday morning first thing off to different local vet. At this point I am concluding that my young cat must have been over enthusiastic and bitten right hurt her in some way in his playful attempts with her. A Young vet cut her claws in case limping because of this. Blood tests normal, injected her and gave me metacam to give her for five days. One dose per day. Monday after injection evident improvement. Tuesday morning I gave her metacam as instructed. Immediate deterioration within an hour. By Tuesday night Luna almost unconscious, no response to noise, not moving, I could literally feel her shaking inside- took her as emergency back to local vet. Meanwhile, I texted original vaccinating vet (I will call her Dee) who said ask them what they i injected her with. I asked, they said steroid. Told Dee who said NO NO NO you can’t mix metacam with steroid. 3am Wednesday decision made to give very small dose steroid plus antibiotics amoxicillin plus doxycycline. Couldn’t wait for metacam to be completely out of system as Luna seriously deteriorating and very high temperature. Blood tests redone all ok nothing evident. Treatment corticosteroids plus doxycycline plus amoxicillin for two weeks followed by tapering steroid dose for a further week. Today is two months on. Luna has lost around 2kilos and is still not herself. Whilst she is certainly improved from the dreadful condition she was in, her behaviour has changed considerably, she is quiet, miserable most of the time, still lethargic and uninterested in food. She eats and drinks without any of her previous enthusiasm and she no longer sleeps on the bed with me, nor does she follow me to the bathroom - habits of 9 years or so all now gone. Now I know what’s wrong with her I just hope that in time she will gain weight and return to her normal self. Meanwhile I am doing all I can to make sure she knows how much she’s loved. I hope this information helps someone in some way

Any vaccine can cause a delayed reaction (in humans as well) and while I agree with the vet that it is uncommon, it shouldn't be whisked away because clearly your cat had it. It takes awhile for symptoms to show up and since the cat can't talk, you don't know it's a problem until their behavior changes. Hopefully, her system will pull it together. My cat already had kidney failure, so the delayed reaction caused her condition to spiral downwards. While a lot of vets poo poo this, my vet has been in practice for decades and has seen this occur with other cats as well.

Have seen many of your posts on immediate (within a day) reactions to vaccines, but has anyone any experience with a severe DELAYED reaction? Pawnee (5 yrs old, spayed DSH) got a Felocel 4 FVRCP and an Imrab 3 rabies booster on April 30. She was totally, completely fine for 8 days. On Friday (a week ago today) she gobbled up her breakfast, seemed just fine, but got quieter and quieter through the day. Would not eat Fri eve or Saturday, Saturday eve temp at 104.5. Took her to emergency vet on Sunday - temp 105. CBC, basic blood panel and FeLV/FIV tests ALL normal. Got 250cc fluids subcu and Convenia. I asked vet about vaccine reaction and he said "very unlikely that far out." Regular vet (Best Vet in The Universe) saw her Monday and her first thought was vaccine reaction. Sure enough, Felocell 4 website says 1% of cats develop fever, lethargy, anorexia beginning 7-21 days AFTER vaccine was given, lasting an average of 12 days. She has spent the week on fluids (subcu and IV), prednisolone, and we've been coaxing her with every possible kind of food (incl KMR). She had one day of a normal temp (and she ate everything in sight), then it went back up, hovering between 103.5 and 104. She's still basically very lethargic, eats very little, feels like crap. Every blood test we've done has come in normal. We do really think this is vaccine-related, but if anyone has been through this, I'd be grateful for your input. It seems we just have to do supportive care, with fluids, steroids, and painkillers, and hang in there till it clears. But it's feeling like a very long haul, and it just kills us to see our tough, smart, active, healthy, opinionated, willful Pawnee in such straits... :-( She was a stray who adopted us, and has been allowed to continue life as an indoor/outdoor cat, and we do get bats in the house occasionally, so I thought I was being a good CatMom by getting her vaccines. I also made a mistake in getting the vaccines from the local vet where our vacation home is instead of from our usual home vet, who would not have stacked the vaccines. She had no difficulty with her first set of vaccines; this was her second vaccination since she's lived with us, and of course we have no clue what her previous history was. I'm beating myself up royally for all this, of course.
But if anyone has seen this happen and has any advice, we'd be so grateful...

Sorry to hear this! What's going on with your kitty? I am not a vet (former vet tech, decades ago), but will be happy to help if I can.

I just received a check from Zoetis for $1,662 to reimburse me for my Vet bills after what seemed like a delayed onset reaction to the Felocell 4 vaccine. My sweet Brutus almost died, and if I had not found this site I never would have even thought about it being a vaccine reaction. Thankfully she is home now for a few weeks and doing better and now eating and putting weight back on. She had a constant non breaking fever of 106, lethargy and severe anorexia. At first I thought we were going to have to put her on a feeding tube . All blood work and urinalysis were normal and her well exam was fine. Just began to show symptoms about two weeks post vaccine. My Vetinarian did a super job and even assisted me with Zoetis to get reimbursed for my Vet bills. But then as soon as Zoetis approved the reimbursement, my Vet informed me that I WAS FIRED . they no longer wanted me as their client , no services ever from here on out! Head hauncho management of the Vet clinic said to me: 'You know that Zoetis is owned by Phizer Medical? And that is where I have all of my accounts. Let me know where you want me to send your medical records. I no longer want you as a client.!"

So yea Zoetis knows this Fellocell 4 is a killer for cats and is still making it and some of the Vets also know it is a killer and administering it .Basically my Vet fired the whistleblower! Thankfully, my Brutus is on the mend and will survive.

First, I am VERY glad your Brutus got through this and is getting well again. Second, I am happy to hear that Zoetis actually reimbursed you for your bills! My vet speaks highly of them as a company, says they really do want to stand behind their products. MIllions of cats get this vaccine with no trouble, but there is always a risk of some individuals... Third, I am absoutely appalled and horrified by the managing vet's attitude and "firing" you as a client. That is utterly unprofessional and possibly unethical. I see from your info that you are in Oklahoma? I would look into the possibility of filing a complaint against him/her (specifically the "head honcho," not your vet who sounds like s/he did a fabulous job!). You can find info and forms for how to do this here: Complaint Process - OK State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.

Good luck, and sending a courteous hello to Brutus from fellow traveler Pawnee... she's older and frailer now, and is now in garden-variety old-cat kidney failure. :-( We love her and spoil her and she gets anything she wants.

So thankful I found this group last year when my cat experience a delayed reaction to the distemper vaccine and almost died. It took a lot of research but my Vet without committing said it could be a delayed reaction and I was refunded my expenses from the manufacturer of the vaccine. My question is.........we are in 1 year and 1 month full recovery and just recently my 4 year old cat will start limping with what appears to be pain in her upper arms it comes and goes and only last a minute or so and we may not see it again for hours. She is an only cat and stays indoors I checked for any visible cause and she does not complain when picked up. Just curios if any other cats in recovery had experienced this. Not sure it it could have caused more damage than originally recovered from.

Hello Jstie:
Several months later, and I am just now finding your reply to my Nov. 19, 2019 post. First I am reading your reply and was surprised when you said that you could see from my info that I am in Oklahoma? Where do you see that or get that idea? No, I am not in Oklahoma nor was i posting in Oklahoma. But my daughter & her family live in OK, but there should be no connection between that and my posting. I just looked at my profile and do not see where it ever asked where we were from. No big deal, just curious.

let me ask you this since you seem very knowledgable about this vaccine injury stuff. My Brutus seems to be doing fine now. However, when she got home last October the anorexia was so bad and she had lost so many pounds, she was utterly scrawny. That i started her on canned wet food whereas she had been on nothing but dry food for ten years of her life. Needless to say she is now 'hooked' to her canned wet food, FAncy Feast. And I read that the Classic Pate variet of Fancy Feast is actually one of the best affordable wet foods, as it is high in protein and relatively low in carbs. I don't know if there is any connection to the fact that I am now feeding her basically wet canned food or if it has anything to do with the vax that she received last Fall, But she is constantly drinking drinking water, always at the water bowl; and consequently always filling up her cat litter box with urine. Where i used to be able to go at least a full week, sometimes more without changing the litter, i now have to change it about every 3 days becuase it is literally soaked with urine and a strong smell in the house.
I know that this can be a sign of diabetes in a cat and i have also read hyperthyroidism or kidney failure. I have not taken her back to any Vet for futher workup because she appears like she feels well; good appetite and now looks good. she has put her weight back on so doesn't really have the other signs you might expect for a diabetic cat. Also when she was in the hospital back in October for her crisis, all the blood work was done and it was normal glucose, kidney function. So I just really did not want to do that whole gamet of Vet bills again.
Do you think the vaccines could have caused now a kidney failure or anything like that. Maybe it is possible that switchinig her over to the wet food is causing so much drinking and consequetnly so much urinating. Or maybe the drinking is being caused by excess urinating. However, wet food has such a higher water content then dry food. If anything I would think she would be needing to drink less. Anyway do you or anyone else have any ideas about this. I had noticed you mentioned that your cat was in kidney failure. Is this one of the signs of the kidneys being strained? Is there anything that you do for kidney failure for your Pawnee? Also is there a li nk to find the Complaint Process for other States. I am not in oklahoma but might want to report it. My head hauncho Vet that fired me, sent me my pet's medical records and at the very top of the papers he wrote "Owner was difficult and rude to staff multiple times over recent weeks." yada yada yada.

I’ve noticed a few people talking about delayed reaction from kitty shots. We believe our Fancy Pants is going through this. If someone is willing to chat- id be most grateful. Fancy got her 2 year shots - rabies and distemper a week ago. She is indoor only and was perfectly healthy. Exactly 7 days after her shots, she was severely lethargic and a fever spiked. This week she has been to the vet 5 times with fevers ranging from 105 to 107. She got fluids and prednisone to bring it down. The next day we took her it was 102.9 but that night after prednisone wore off, it went to 105.
the pattern continues...prednisone brings fever down and she uses bathroom and eats a few bites. Once temp goes up...I won’t see her until her next dose. Blood panel came back very good and nothing wrong at all. I am convinced it was her vaccinations. I am so worried and I want a happy ending. She’s only 2 years old.
Hi - I am the original poster on this thread, with our experience with Pawnee. It certainly sounds like you may be having the same thing. It took Pawnee a full month to shake this off, with many days of fluids, prednisone, and buprenorphine. At times, the fever would drop, she’d eat like crazy, then it would spike again. The fluids seemed to do the most good getting the temp to drop. It was just a very long haul of supportive care, but she did finally come through it. For future reference, while we never vaccinated her again for anything, my vet in general prefers not to give both the FVRCP and rabies on the same visit - just too much for the immune system to handle. She also vaccinates every 3 years, not 2. Also, a couple years after this was all over, our poor Pawnee developed a serious systemic fungal infection (histoplasmosis). It’s endemic in the soil where we live. She was very sick and had to get antifungal meds for 6 months. The fungus embedded in her retinas and left her blind. I don’t know this for a fact, but I wonder if the vaccine reaction might have damaged her immune system so she was sicker from the fungus than she might have been otherwise. So, once your Fancy Pants gets through this, you might want to be especially vigilant about any infections she might be exposed to, and get prompt treatment. Pawnee went on to live happily to 14 (best guess) - in fact, she just passed away three days ago. :-( Patience, supportive care, lots of yummy food and time, and Fancy ought to get better. Good luck.

Wow! I am terribly sorry Pawnee passed! Sending love and prays to you from one cat lover to another! it’s encouraging to hear she lived that long!
I was trying to figure out how to contact you once I found your thread.
I am so happy I found you because I feel like people think I’m crazy! We are starting her on sub q fluids today!! Praying she pulls through this. My vet is at least on board with the idea of it being vaccines. I will NOTvaccinate her again. Especially because she is an indoor only cat.

Did you take Pawnees temp regularly? I feel like once the prednisone wears off, we are back in the fever boat. She is terrible at letting me take her temp. Did you see improvement day by day or was it pretty much the same for the whole month? She is still eating/peeing/pooping during the 4 hours prednisone is given. Did u take her in for rechecks often during this month?
I just feel so helpless.

Can you tell me how you went about contacting Zoetis? I know we have a case. Fancy did receive Felocell 4 ....the very small 1% of cats typically react to the chlamydia component. This is not found in Felocell 3....(which I thought she got) and there is zero delayed reaction reported from Felocell 3.
I would love to be reimbursed for all our medical bills. Fancy is only on day 8 since onset symptoms. I know we have a long way to go. was Brutus on prednisolone? If so, for how long? Fancy’s fever topped out at 107 last week. Thankfully we are working with the 102-105 now. Still not great though! Any advice would be most appreciated!

Good luck.
I'm so sorry to hear about your sweet Pawnee. She was so blessed to have had you to adore her and I'm sure she is eternally grateful. All we can ever hope for is a happy life for our babes and you surely gave her that.

hey everyone! My baby Jade is going through this now. She got her shots on June 17th, and by the 23rd she had a fever, was very lethargic and sleeping all day (she’s usually a playful and energetic cat) and completely lost her appetite. Took her to the vet and she got subq fluids and convenia. We’re now on day 9 and she’s feeling better - no more fever, more alert and less lethargic, eating and drinking regularly.... but she’s acting like her feet are killing her and doesn’t want to walk at all. Did any of you experience this, and how long did it last? I’m trying to avoid giving her anymore meds because I’m worried about side effects, but it’s been 3 days with this pain and I hate seeing her so uncomfortable so I’m getting desperate 😭

She’s a 3 year old domestic shorthair by the way! The absolute healthiest cat, in perfect shape and has never had a single health problem before this!
