Sorry, I am probably once again "guilty" of using British words from my old life in England (1948/1958) and my dictionaries are English not American. Let me try again. The reply as a noun corresponds to "external appearance in general" and "customary behaviour or manner" As a verb "to disguise or be disguised in fancy dress" g---e

Yes, and the definitions are related to "fancy dress" but with enough differences that the word didn't spring to mind!
