Just a general question and if you got any advice about it.

So my cat is around 12 lbs and currently one year old. I got his crate when he was 4 months.

So, he still fits on his regular grate but it started to feeling more heavy to moving around with it.
Going down downstairs feels more difficult now.

I feel I should get a backpack type of carrier for future vet journey or something on the softer side (his current one is a hard case)

Any hard carrier can be made more comfortable with a folded old towel or something.

There are carriers with wheels that would make transport a little easier. Some are soft sided, others are hard sided. Some examples:

A small luggage dolly / cart would also work. Just strap the current carrier onto it with bungee cords or something. I found this but there are others: Mr. Peanut's Pet Carrier/Luggage Bag Spinner Wheelbase Luggage Cart

I think a bigger hard crate or something like mentioned above would be best. If it becomes hard for them to turn around inside, then it's not very comfortable.

Hi! I have four cats and I’ve tried a lot of carriers and crates so here my advice…

Soft Carriers:
pros
- suitable for long distance journeys.
- usually can be folded and unfolded.
- airline approved.
- more comfortable for cats.
- pockets around the carrier for cat’s things.
cons
- fairly expensive.
- some cats can chomp the fabric.
- 10kg> difficult to carry.

Hard Carriers:
pros

- cheap.
- easy to purchase.
- safe and secure.
- easy cleaning.
cons
- not airline approved.
- more bulky.
- can become uncomfortable.
- difficult to store (especially when more than one cat)

Cat Backpacks:
pros
- easy to carry.
- handy when hiking/travelling short distances.
- allows the cat to watch and be watched.
- easy to clean.
cons
- most cats don’t like being watched and if that happens then this carrier is not for you… also not an starter carrier.
