Took a leap into the big city, and got easily overwhelmed in one block. SO many choices! Just for coffee! Darted into a pocket park with my book for steady ground and….peering over the edge of my book, whom should I see? A pair of whimpering, melting brown eyes looking back at me. “Ohhhh nooo “ thought I, and watched it for a good hour. She’d been dumped, soon after having pups. SUCH a sweetheart. She kept sniffing her owner’s footsteps, right to the edge of the street— the b&#rd didn’t even both to get out of the car. Black, pit lab mix, a little bit bigger than a football. So, after conniving a leash out of my backpack & asking around (and searching for the pups) we ambled our way to the police station. Those big burly guys melted over her, fed her, gave her water and saw that she was handed over to a no kill shelter. I almost took her home with me, but since there’s a 3 year waiting list for the vet, I can’t. “Don’t worry, a sweetheart like this will be adopted in no time,” they said. And I have no doubt of that: she was one of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever encountered.

Notes:

Never travel to a park without a leash, water and a folding bowl.
Download the app that can read whether or not a pet has a chip (she didn’t)
Make sure your phone is charged so you can talk with the pet shelters

My guess is either being part pit, she was used to breed fighters. No sign of the pups. Either that or this person got overwhelmed with too many dogs. To this person’s “credit” she was in excellent condition with clipped nails and a fancy leather harness.

Bless you and you are right! We usually have cat food in the car but no dog food. DH keeps seeing what he thinks is a stray up the road, but due to it disappearing sometimes, he thinks it belongs to someone.

Yeah it’s hard to tell, sometimes, innit? With this, it was instant: you just knew. (I mean really, she told me without even using the English language!). Then there are those “are they aren’t they” ones. I think some good rules of thumbs are: how well are they treated, do they have ID…if you know the neighbors at all, what vibe do you get. And also, how is the dog behaving— is it frightened or defensive? Is there a rib cage? Then there are homeless people w/ pets, which is hard too. Sometimes your own emotional radar can tell you what’s going on. In your case, it sounds as if more detective work might be needed. But I didn’t even know there WAS an app which could read a pet’s chip, which can solve a lot of issues, although she was a bit scared when the iPhone came near her, I’m not sure why.

Hoorayyy! The little black dog was adopted today by some loving person! I wish I could watch it grow up and receive updates, but at least it has a home.

That is such a happy ending for that dog! You were her champion and because of you her entire life took a new direction.

I went back into the city to see a friend and brought the police officers some cannolis. I don’t often thank cops but sometimes they come through, and their help in getting this momma dog a forever home meant a great deal.
