Took a leap into the big city, and got easily overwhelmed in one block. SO many choices! Just for coffee! Darted into a pocket park with my book for steady ground and….peering over the edge of my book, whom should I see? A pair of whimpering, melting brown eyes looking back at me. “Ohhhh nooo “ thought I, and watched it for a good hour. She’d been dumped, soon after having pups. SUCH a sweetheart. She kept sniffing her owner’s footsteps, right to the edge of the street— the b&#rd didn’t even both to get out of the car. Black, pit lab mix, a little bit bigger than a football. So, after conniving a leash out of my backpack & asking around (and searching for the pups) we ambled our way to the police station. Those big burly guys melted over her, fed her, gave her water and saw that she was handed over to a no kill shelter. I almost took her home with me, but since there’s a 3 year waiting list for the vet, I can’t. “Don’t worry, a sweetheart like this will be adopted in no time,” they said. And I have no doubt of that: she was one of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever encountered.
Notes:
Never travel to a park without a leash, water and a folding bowl.
Download the app that can read whether or not a pet has a chip (she didn’t)
Make sure your phone is charged so you can talk with the pet shelters
