My older cat seemed bored so I thought I’d get a leash and harness and walk him around the yard. It did the trick. It put life back into him. He loved it. He had more energy.
The problem, when we come back inside he cries and howls and bellows constantly to go back outside.
I try taking him out more often but nothing changes. We’ve done this about 3 days now.
I couldn’t take it anymore so I didn’t take him out and after a day he quit all of it.
I’m wondering if I try again to walk him will this get better after more time Or should I stop taking him out all together?

Awww, Bacon Bit. It sounds as if you expanded the world he knew! Perhaps he is comprehending it all. Very kind of you to do this, esp. since, me reading this as a member of the Audubon Society, you are doing it in a way that respects other wild creatures. Think if it had been you, and YOU suddenly discovered there’s a World Out There. Maybe, he just needs time. It’s quite a very sweet huge gift you’ve given him.

Thank you for your reply. I think I will give It some more time and take him back out.
The cat actually being walked outside is Grey my 10 year old baby.
And we will always be on a leash for his safety and the safety of the birds I feed. I’m a bird nerd as well as a cat lover. It truly melted my heart with joy to see Grey experience this new big world outside 🐈⬛

Cats often just like being where they're blocked from. My cats want to go out, so I let them out. Then a moment later they want back in. How dare the door be closed! I think if you have kind of a schedule about it, your cat may realize that it happens when you get the harness or whathaveyou. But doesn't mean he won't ever complain about it not happening on his terms!

K Kris107 may have just hit the nail on the head. Set up a strict schedule for walks. Same time, every day. At first, he may continue to howl, but (at least pretend to) ignore it. Walks are scheduled. He will learn fairly quickly that he can depend on his outside time, and when it will happen, just the way they do with meal times!

I found having a timer or alarm tell the cat when something happens (separating it from me) was helpful with this behaviour.
But crying is their way to tell you what they want. I gave my cat an outside button to tell me but now he just presses it AND screams. But we got into a habit of what time we go at and that's beneficial to limiting thr yelling he does.

So you taught your cat to push a button when he or she wants to go outside ? How did you train him or her to do that ?

Yes they have buttons for a few things. You teach by pressing the button before doing the thing. Then your cat eventually presses it.

Most of them, you can record what word or short phrase you want your cat to learn. Works with dogs, as well.

:yeah:
I totally agree — strict schedule will lower the cat's complaint level.

The word, "Walkies", is ideal for my cat. 😼

So you're just looking for a recordable button :) they usually come in packs of 4 so you can record for 3 other activities he might like too!
