We just got a 9 week old kitten which just tested positive on a fecal test for coccidia. We have had her only a couple of days & she had no symptoms. The vet said its treatable & prescribed Ponazuril for two doses each a week apart...then re-test. Since we already have 2 other cats, does anyone know if this can be solved easily or is it a long term problem? We kept her in a separate room until we could get her to a vet for first check up. (Also what is safe disinfectant to use around cats?) Thanks.

We had Dexter use a separate litterbox that only he could access when he had his bout with parasites (I don't remember which one he had) and blocked off the big cat's boxes so he couldn't get to them. When he was retested and was in the clear, we allowed him access to the main litterboxes.
Wash what you can in hot water with a little bleach or 1/2 cup vinegar. I don't have any recommendations for cleaners. Maybe you could steam clean other surfaces?

Several years ago, I ended up with a mother cat and four kittens who all had coccidia. I treated the whole group, and they all cleared it without any extreme measures. Ponazuril was not yet available, according to Google, and, as I understand it, it has to be specifically compounded for cats and dogs.

I guess what I'm saying is that if you think there's a high chance your other cats have been exposed, could you treat them as a group rather than trying to treat one of them? Sometimes vets are only looking at the cat directly in front of them, and you have to bring up the ramifications for the rest of them.

Our other two cats have not been exposed to the new kitten, so I was wondering how easy is it to track coccidia parasites to the others. What medicine did you use on the mother & 4 kittens to clear it? Thanks.
