Cat's eyes are rolling back

We have a beautiful cat who's eyes have recently started rolling back in his head. He's seems normal beyond this. I have attached pictures. I live in a small rural community and no vets are open today (Sunday), but there is a vet clinic an hour and a half away that is open. I just hate to take him that far if it can wait until tomorrow. Any thoughts or ideas on what this is and if I should make a dashing trip to vet hospital so far away?

It looks like what you are seeing is the third eyelid. Cats and some reptiles have a third eyelid that protects the eye while still allowing them to see a bit.

In cats there is a number of reasons you may see it. Normally it stays tucked away in the corner of the eye.

Is your cat dehydrated? Has she been in any scraps outside? Is there any discharge? It's really hard to say without veterinary help.

You say you live in a rural area surly there are vets who tend to farm animals there? If you know any neighbors who keep livestock or horses you could try asking them.

I do think it's important she see a vet of some sort. None of us is able to prescribe medication she needs to help her. If she isn't treated she will likely not get better.

Check your yellow pages if you must. Many vets will do house calls.

I do think she will be fine overnight if you keep her indoors so she wont be attacked by wolves fox etc..

Thank you, we do have local vets, but none that are open on Sundays. For him to get attention today would mean a long drive. I've never seen him do this before. That's why I was a little freaked out earlier. His appetite is good, and he seems ok beyond this, just surprised in that I've had cats for a long time and have never seen this before. I'm going to wait until tomorrow. I hate to stress him out with a 3 hour round trip if it can wait till the morning.

Since he is eating you should be fine until Monday morning. Just keep him inside for the night also makes it easier to catch him when you do take him. Also since his vision is slightly impaired he is vulnerable to attacks by wild animals.

You won't normally see the third eyelid in a healthy cat. You will see it in a sick or dehydrated cat. You might also see it if the cat has an eye injury.

Make sure he has plenty of water and stays inside and he should be fine till morning.

Most of the members who replied to this thread have not been around for a while, including the OP. IMO, the amount of third eyelid protrusion in your cat should be referred to your vet.
