There are many videos of cats unexpectedly coming across a cucumber or zucchini lying on the floor. The cats leap high away in fear. It's almost as if they have come across a snake.
I tried it on my cats. I placed a zucchini on the floor where they usually walk. One ignored it completely after giving it a glance. The second gave it a thorough sniffing and decided it wasn't good to eat, so he walked away. The third approached it cautiously, gave it a good swat, and realizing it wasn't anything good to play with and it wasn't going to attack him, went his merry way.
