Hello!

I came back from Brazil Yesterday, after two weeks, and here I was thinking: how do cats react at our return home?

Everyone says they get offended, they don't let you pet them.

My boys firstly smelled all my bags. Then came to get their share of cuddles and since then they almost never leave my side. They always stay in the room I am in. Tonight they slept by my side, both of them.

How do yours react? Just curious.

Never had a cat that was 'offended'. Mostly just glad to see me, and if I had the right caretaker sitting for them in my absence, they weren't even overly cuddly with me upon my return. They just seemed to be happy to get back (quickly) to what they considered a normal routine, as no one sitting for them can actually create the exact same.

Never had an issue when I went on holiday decades ago. Only time I've had a cat react badly was when I had to put Phoebe in a cattery - a crappy, tiny, back-yard place as it turned out, where she was practically nose to nose with cats in other cages. That was an emergency, because I couldn't take her straight to the place I was moving to from interstate, thanks to Grace Brothers' incompetence. When I was finally able to collect her, she looked over her shoulder and hissed at me. She's never done that before or since.

Mine are usually glad to have us back and get back to their normal routine. They also don't get to go outside while we're gone, so they are very excited to see their "door butlers". They usually don't like too much affection though until I shower and smell "right" again. I had one cat (color point) who would talk for ages the night we came home. Almost like he had to tell us all about what happened while we were gone.

When I've been gone for anything longer then a night, my cats tend to become velcro for a day or two before slipping back into normal. There have been a few times where they don't make eye contact but still want to be near me but most of the time they wants lots of pets.

My parents just got back from a nearly 7 month trip (not a typo). I live with them and take care of things when they are out. My mom has a very bonded cat who will sleep with only after she's been gone for a few months. When she's home, he cries for Mom to put him down for a nap (literally, meowing and following her until she puts him in bed with a blanket over him) level of connected. When she got back last week, it took him a day or two before he started crying for a nap again. My cats slid right back into normal with just minor changes (Link being a little more settled when I get home because he wasn't alone all day).

I had one Patches who wouldn't come near me until I'd been and had a bath and smelled like me, then it was all good. He was like that after every holiday. But he surprised me after my last vacation he came for cuddles with Bandit who always did come straight away. But for the younger cat Lucky wouldn't come down the stairs it was like I wouldn't say scared but apprehensive you could tell he wanted to come but kept going back up away from us. It took him about half an hour before he came for his cuddles but was fine after that. I think it's just the unusual smells they don't like.
