Cat worming

Can someone help me with this.
I purchased Pyrantel Pamoate oral suspension. 250mg/5ml
I'm having trouble figuring out how to dose my cat for worms.
For some reason I can't wrap my head around exactly how much to give her. Her approx weight is 10lbs.
Could some one share their greymatter with me... As my pages seems to be sticking together. I used to be really good at math but for some reason this is stumping me.

Hi there and welcome!

Pyrantel is extremely gentle and very safe.

A general rule for dosing is point 1 (.1) ml per pound for kittens, and as the weight goes up just reduced it a bit, for instance a 2 lb kitten gets 0.2 ml, a 5 lb gets 0.4, I would dose a 10 lb cat at about 0.7 ml.

Be sure to re-dose in 2 weeks!

This is actually the correct dosing, I know I prefer it to be a bit higher as I stated before in my post.

But this is how to figure it out according to the manufacturer.

Yours is the regular strength, 5 mls equals 50 mgs which is standard.

Here's how you calculate the dose:

Body weight in pounds divided by 2.2 gives you the body weight in kg.

For example, a 15 pound cat is 6.81 kg.

Then, take the kg weight and multiply it by 5 -- in the example above, the 15 pound (6.81 kg) cat would get 34 mg of the pyrantel.

Since each ml contains 50 mg, take 34 and divide by 50......34/50 = .68 mls. The dose of the pyrantel for the 15 pound cat is .68 mls.

Here is a dosing chart to use:

8 pound cat .36 mls

9 pound cat .40 mls

10 pound cat .45 mls

11 pound cat .5 mls

12 pound cat .54 mls

13 pound cat .6 mls

14 pound cat .63 mls

16 pound cat .68 mls.
