Cat won't let me hold paws during nail trimming

I have had a 3yr old rescue for 2 months, and she will not let me hold her paws. She is not a lap cat, and she prefers to keep her distance. I try to pet her paws, every so often, but she doesn't care for that. So right now, I've only been able to trim her nails when she's asleep, but she's a pretty light sleeper. May be able to get one nail a day. In generally, once I touch her paws, she pulls back. Was wondering if you have any suggestions to make this a little more manageable and less stressful for both of us.
