Last month I took in my cat because I woke up and noticed one of her eyes is swollen and inflamed with a bunch of discharge. I took her to the vet, he did a florescent color patch test, and found no wounds. He prescribed me avanticlav(amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium), and Tobermycin drops. The cat got better after a short while, but when the pills were done after 7 days, it got worse again. He gave me another 7 days, then another. After that, my cat started to get worse again. All this while still taking the drops the entire time. Doctor didnt know what to do. He prescribed me eythromycin 5 days ago, the one eye looks a little better, but the other started to get infected and I started treating it two days ago.

I also have another cat which is outdoors most of the day. He also started to show a little discharge in his eye several days ago, but I have been treating him three times a day with salt water, honey and water, and also lysine with my other cat. He seems fine most of the time, but I will still give him honey and lysine. No noticable large redness or inflammation, just regular eye redness.

I'm starting to get worried because my other cat has had the infection for this long and being on the antibiotics she was on helped, but it came back. I worried that even this medication wont fix the problem since she has redness and inflammation still, but its getting better. He told me that if this doesnt work, he will refer me to an eye specialist.

What are your thoughts on this? Anyone dealt with this before?

I'm sorry you and your cat are going through this. It sounds like a viral infection to me, but you say it did actually get better with the antibiotics. The only experience I have had is with my cat Pushy who has chronic feline herpes. His eye weeps all the time and we have to wipe it several times a day. It's something that won't go away, but it's not getting worse.
I'm thinking a specialist for you would be a good idea at this point. It sounds like a very persistent infection and you need to find out what it is. Good luck.

I was still really surprised how she contracted her pink eye anyways. My other outdoor cat was fine. My cat stays inside all the time, and when she is out we supervise her the entire time. I really hope it isnt viral. It would suck if her pinkeye was chronic.

Can they culture the discharge to see what kind of bacteria it is? Perhaps the prescriptions aren't correct for the type of infection?

Oh, I forgot to mention that Gizmo-sama will have bouts of eye irritation and discharge. It's either herpes flare-ups or he's allergic to something (seems to be somewhat seasonal) or his wobbly butt has bumped into something again. I've tried a few different antibiotics at the vet but it kept coming back. Now I keep his eyes clean and if it's very bad I bought an eye rinse.

Honestly thats what they should've done, but my vet doesnt do it. He said if it doesnt work, he will send me to a specialist. lol TBH if I were the vet I would do it, and see what type of infection it is first. Its kind of useless to keep medicating something if you cant narrow it down. A lot of people have told me polysporin works well but my vet seems to disagree. Many vets also use B.N.P ointment which is very good for first line but he only started me off on the ones he had
