Hi I’m not sure if this is the right thread but I really need some insight. My beloved cat got out three weeks ago. Tonight someone called and told me they found a cat skull in an area near our house. He sent the video and… I just can’t tell. The skull is fairly decomposed, there is no fur and most of the flesh looks gone around the mouth though there is still skin around the nose and eyes. There is a patch of black fur (my cat has black fur) and what kind of looks like gray fur but it’s hard to tell. The teeth are still there as well as the gums. We live in a hot place about 90 degrees and it rained for about three days right after she went missing. There are lots of strays in the area as well as bobcats. My question is, does this description sound like three weeks worth of decomposition? Are there any markers that could really tell me?

Hi M Magscamp I`m sorry to hear your cat is missing.

What you are describing does sound about right for 3 weeks of decomposition. I live in area that gets a lot of rain, has lots of scavengers and is very hot during the summer. I`ve seen wildlife carcasses break down to just bones in a few weeks.

However, that doesn`t mean that this is your cat. Is it possible to go to the area and see if there are any other remains around? Did your cat still have all of her teeth? Was she wearing a collar?

I hope it wasn`t her.

:hugs:

thank you for your input! she did have all of her teeth but had a little gap in the bottom and unfortunately this skull appears to have the same. But the video that was sent did appear to show gray fur and I’m holding onto the hope that it was gray and not my cat. She did not have a collar when she went missing but she is chipped. Im very tempted to go look at the skull now but its very late where I live and its a wooded area so im a bit scared. I will go and check first thing in the morning and the area for the rest of the body but am so antsy for answers now.
