Hello, this topic could probably be in Cat Health as well but her behavior is part of the problem.

My kitty has had allergy issues and after a few vet visits in April and May, I thought we had her symptoms under control. She was eventually treated for yeast infection in her ears. After an attempt at ointments, she received an ear pack that takes a month to dissolve. Everything was going fine after that until this past week when a spot of fur disappeared on her ear. She is a shelter rescue and only allows me to pet her during snack time twice a day. The ear spot appeared overnight, it was not a gradual thing. And it appeared on the same ear (right) that received the ear pack, if that makes a difference.

She doesn't seem to be scratching more than normal but she does rub her cheeks and ears on door edges and door jambs. During our pet sessions twice a day, she rubs her cheeks on my hand and gets it wet. I will take my moist hand and rub it on the top and back of her head and she sometimes even rubs her ears on my damp hand. Could the wet hand rubbing on her head be a partial cause of her focusing rubs and scratches on her ear? I'm wondering if the saliva evaporates and irritates the skin somehow.

For a couple of days I have stopped letting her rub her ears on my hand during snack time but I can't tell much difference in her behavior and the bald spot on her ear is not improving although it is not getting worse either.

What do y'all think? My main question is about rubbing her saliva on her ears with my hand. Is that a no-no? Has anyone ever encountered ear fur falling off before and did it require vet visits? Thanks everyone!

Hi. I doubt it is related to her saliva, considering that - I assume - she grooms and she would likely have other spots on her body if she was allergic to her own saliva. It sounds more like she could be either allergic to the meds in the ear pack, or that she hasn't fully eradicated the yeast infection.

Has she been re-checked to ensure the yeast infection is gone? Or, since the ear pack has dissolved, this is a residual effect that will dissipate the further she gets away from the treatment. Either way, give your vet a call and see what they think.

Hello, thank you for the reply. Yes, we can probably rule out the saliva thing. She received the ear pack on May 24, so it should have been dissolved and done a month ago. Therefore I believe if she were allergic to it, the symptoms would have manifested sooner. Your other two options are probably what we have. Either the yeast infection is back or it is a residual effect of the dissolved ear pack.

Looks like a vet call is in order. Thanks again.
