My recent adoptee had a little accident on the way to the vet this last Friday, she was going in for her second dose of tapeworm meds and I guess she got a little scared and pee'd in the carrier. Since then, I've been having an extremely difficult time cleaning the smell off the carrier, and no matter what I use, it still lingers.

I've tried just outright taking it in the shower and scrubbing it down with soap. I've tried couch-cleaning sprays and scrubbed that afterwards, and nothing. I've even tried Nature's Miracle Advanced Stain and Odor Eliminator with the lemon scent and scrubbed that afterwards, and even left some sprayed on to seep in. Nothing has worked outright, it smells better but there is still a deep smell of urine to it.

Any recommendations here?

Try a 50/50 mixture of water/vinegar and let it dry out in the sun, even better if you can open up the carrier so the pee area is exposed to the sun. Air drying it will also help to dissipate any residual smell from the vinegar.

Any specific kind of Vinegar? I have apple cider vinegar at home, but if not, I'll visit the store soon and get some plain ol vinegar instead. Thanks for the tip!

Either white or apple cider vinegar will work.

You can also mix a liberal shot glass (1.5 fl. oz.) of glacial acetic acid with a quart of water and you'd have basically the same thing as white vinegar. Glacial acetic acid is the main component of white vinegar. It's just diluted down to 5% by volume to make white vinegar. It's stinky as all heck but, if you wear your PPE, work carefully and use plenty of ventilation, it won't hurt you.

Glacial acetic acid costs about $40/liter and will make 20 liters of a 5% solution with water. White vinegar costs in the neighborhood of $3.00 for a quart. (Close to a liter.) It would cost you $60 to buy 20 qt./liter of white vinegar at the grocery store.

Like I said, white vinegar is just diluted acetic acid. Why not save the store-bought for cooking, use the home made for cleaning and save yourself a few bucks in the process?

That's what I do. Acetic acid is one of the things I use in photography for developing film. I buy it by the liter and dilute it down to the concentration I need. I don't use very much of the stuff for developing. Basically an ounce at a time, diluted with water. So, I've got a lot of the stuff, lying around. Whenever I need a mild acidic cleaner, I just go down to my darkroom and pour out a shot glass full. ;)

Thanks for all the tips everyone!

Everything you wrote was extremely helpful and thorough, thank you for that!

I think for now, just a simple 3 dollar glass of store bought vinegar would be best bet. This is the first pee related accident I've had in the past decade or so. Litto, the one in question, likely has some time before her next vet visit so if it happens again I'll definitely go the route you suggested.

I tried everything. But when a tom cat got on my catio (my cats weren't there) and PEED like it was his life's mission all over the cat tree...I thought it was total loss. You could smell it from the front yard. I tried everything but the smell was always still faintly there and my cats avoided it. Somehow, I found this stuff and it works in totally eliminating the nasty pee smell. I used it on that cat tree, carriers where rescue cats peed when scared, plush toys that got peed on...anything, and I can't smell the pee and neither can other cats, so that means it works. No, I don't work for the company. I have just had cats pee on things like my saddle cover and my shirt while sitting in my lap and this stuff has saved me from having to throw everything out.
