So the past few days I've noticed my cat, Merlin, meowing while peeing. He does this when he poops sometimes and we took him to the vet and had ruled out constipation and he had no diahrea - maybe just an announcement thing. Well yesterday I noticed him doing it but he was peeing. His pee looked fine (he marked the inside of the box) and he didn't take a long time to do it, didn't seem like he was in pain.

Today he did it again, but this time it was a small amount of pee. He covered it and went about his business, has been playing and eating since. He doesn't seem to have any other symptoms of a UTI like blood, he's not yowling just normal meowing, no lethargy or licking his parts, doesn't look discomforted. I'm not sure if I should take him in to be evaluated? I'm thinking about it to be on the safe side - he eats a combination of wet and dry food and I know he drinks water.

Hi. I honestly would take him in ASAP. The fact that he only urinated a small amount is what concerns me. He could have a partial urinary blockage that could become a full one soon. It is far better to address this sooner than later.

You think, even with no other symptoms? I think I'm just on high alert because of the meowing but right now he is absolutely chillin. I mean I don't check his pee regularly, I just scoop it out, so this could have been a normal amount for him, I just don't know. Just seemed like a small amount, you know.

That is small for an adult cat. Definitely no tutor and make sure he goes again. I would get him into your vet in the morning.

I ended up taking him to the ER vet just in case. They did an ultrasound - no crystals, stones, or blockages. Wanted to wait some time for urine to form so they could do a sample but I declined (it’s 1am and I can’t afford the overnight fee right now). They gave him some gabapentin and said it’s likely cystitis. I’m a little worried now because I got him home and he’s licking himself a lot, especially his backend, but i noticed he does have a little poop stuck right on his anus. Maybe that’s why?

It’s hard to say. But I think it was wise to get him looked at. Something is obviously wrong. Try to get him to your regular vet for a urinalysis if you can tomorrow if he has t improved.

I called my vet this morning to see what their recommendation was - waiting on a reply. The receptionist suggested bringing home some special litter to try that, but I’d almost rather have a vet syringe it out of his bladder, I’m not sure what luck I’ll have getting him to try a new litter

Hi. I don't know what your vet's office is like, but most vets will let you bring a cat in with no appt. and a tech can normally get a urine sample if you don't think you can do it at home yourself. Call them back and ask if that is possible.

I am at a different vet right now that could take me right away!

The vet got some pee! Sending it off for testing, will take until tomorrow. gave him some inflammation meds as well. Hopefully we are done with crates for now because I feel so stressed myself stressing him out like this!!! :(

Okay update: The urinalysis will be back today. Meanwhile, he had a good night, ate, slept well, this morning got up to pee and meowed, then didn't end up peeing. This is making me insane!! What do I do?! We've been to the vet twice in less than 48 hours (I am one to rush to the emergency vet at the drop of a hat), and have spent $500, he has been getting stressed for the vet visits - do I wait for the urinalysis results to make further decisions? The vet via ultrasound only 30 hours ago said he did not have a blockage and had no crystals/stones in his bladder - do I go by what that vet said and wait for the urinalysis? Rush him back to the emergency vet?

update two: he went to another of the litter boxes and peed! More than he has recently, so that’s good

Well folks I'm back.

The gabapentin seemed to work last week and he has seemed okay but now my guy went to the litter this evening and was "peeing", but not peeing and crying. Do I take him back to the emergency vet every time this happens? Do I monitor? He's done with the gabapentin, they didn't prescribe it, so do I get more?

More gabapentin, or something else to help with anxiety. Can you get some more gabapentin, sooner rather than later?

When they did the ultrasound, did any one mention inflammation? He might need anti-inflammatories, and perhaps anti-spasmodics. The thing is even if he had no blockage before, if he is inflamed enough, in his urethra, it can cause at least a partial blockage and lots of pain.

Pay serious heed to the information above about cystitis.
