He gets into fights so maybe this is a wound that will heal. Could it be something else?

It's a discharge from his eyes. Are his third eyelids covering part of his eyes too? I can see part of one. Does he sleep more? Maybe eat less? He may have feline herpes, very common, like a human cold. It is NOT transmissible to humans. I give my cats DMG every day to ward this off. It really works for me. You could wipe his eyes gently with a warm wet rag. Keep him in a bathroom after you take a shower for 15 minutes or so so he gets some humidity. If the discharge turns green/yellow and gets really thick he may need some eye salve. You pull gently down on his lower lid until a pocket forms and squeeze in a thin line. i think you can even get it online now at some pet med sites. It's called tobramycin ophthalmic ointment, or ask your vet for some.
