IN SHORT: she can’t get enough air, raspy breathing, green mucus – vet thought it’s cat flu, then tuberculosis, now he thinks lungworms are causing pneumonia. However, NO meds (antibiotics, dexamethasone, etc etc) have worked AT ALL.

Hello everyone,

My cat has been sick for the last year, and I’m at my wits end. The vet could not find a conclusive diagnosis. Nothing seems to help… I’m hoping someone here has any idea.

Her symptoms:
· Can’t breathe well, sits still with her face upwards and mouth slightly open (to get some air). She won’t lay down.
· Every breath sounds raspy, like something is bubbling.
· Every now and then she swallows hard (again, like something was bubbling up).
· Green mucus runs from her nose (I have to clean her nose for her when it plugs her nostrils).
· She barely eats or drinks.
· She feels relatively cold to the touch, no fever. (I have not taken her temperature)

On a bad day all these symptoms are present and severe.
She has some ‘good’ days but even then, she sounds raspy and can’t breathe like a healthy cat.

Her history: Two years ago she began to sneeze and cough. The vet thought it was cat flu. She got antibiotics daily, and prednisolone and dexamethasone. The raspy breathing stayed.
The breathing difficulties and general malaise got worse over the past year so we took her to a (new) vet about two months ago. He took x-ray photos and saw white dots in her lower lungs, so he thought it was tuberculosis. But because she had not been dewormed, he changed his mind and said it might be lungworm. So she got dewormed; she got antibiotics (only made her cold symptoms grow worse); and she got dexamethasone again.

Nothing worked at all, she is still feeling very poor and can't breathe properly.

My guess is pneumonia... but my biggest question is, Why don't the meds help?
Feeling very clueless and hopeless, my cat deserves better.

Does anyone know what this might be and if it can be helped?

P.S. We have three other cats in the house, none of them have gotten sick at all.

I don’t have experience with that.

I would suggest going to another vet. Bring all the testing results you did with this vet and have them look at the results/do their assessment. You make sure you tell them all her symptoms/length of sickness/specific episodes, etc. you are her advocate since she can’t speak for herself.

When was her last X-ray? They may want to do another one.

A chest X-ray is highly indicaticated in these types of situations.

They may want to do other imaging test like a CT and possibly even a MRI (which are better imaging basically) to accurately diagnose her.

She may have asthma or another chronic lung condition.

When you had her on the steroids, did you notice any improvement?

Green mucus to me though sound infectious. It could be both a bad infection and a chronic lung disorder.

Raspy breathing could indicate a blockage or/and tightening of the bronchioles (and therefore a chronic lung disorder or allergy response).

Another vet’s opinion should be highly sought out. Look in your area for a highly rated vet and set up an appointment. You can also look for a vet pulmonologist (Lung specialist). That may even be better to go too then another general vet. I know it can be expensive, but respiratory problems are very serious. I’m so sorry you both have to go through this. I really hope you find some clear answers soon

I think i know what it could be...
My kitten was experiencing very similar symptoms to yours- she was poisoned!
She passed away a few months ago from being poisoned
We took her to vets and they gave her meds, anti-vomiting injections, subcutaneous fluids etc.
Nothing worked
She was dehydrated from not drinking water, stopped eating, in pain ALL the time (2-3 days before her passing), she breathed weirdly, vomited bubbly, smelly, brown/green coloured vomit...
She was in so much pain and we knew nothing about it!
I WOULD SUGGEST GOING TO ANOTHER VET, EXPLAINING YOUR SYMPTOMS AND ASK THEM TO CONDUCT X-RAYS, BLOOD TESTS ( BOTH ARE A MUST!) AND MAKE SURE THEY LISTEN TO YOU - THEY NEED TO DO THEIR JOB WHICH IS TO TREAT YOUR BABY KITTY...

When the vet suggested it could be that i was just like it's probably not, she just needs some food and water in her and my my were we all wrong!
She is in heaven now, pain-free and happy. I remember her everyday :-(

Good Luck! :-)
I hope your baby is okay, Please keep us updated

what about albuterol at your vets? It's a bronchodilator. it wont treat inflammation but it will open the airways.

amoxicillian is often not strong enough...I would ask vet for: Zithromax or doxycycline-my cat gets bad URI and usually Zithromax zaps it good. you can get it as a liquid or they chop the pills up for you-you will need empty gel caps/syringes for water AND a pill popper-from amazon-it's green and works wonders.

I wonder if there's asthma going on-x rays need to be done-the lungs would show grey/white areas of inflammation. then they can prescribe inhaled flovent. It's expensive in usa-I order on inhousepharmacy . vu and they take echecks. been using them since 2013. they will need a script from your vet photographed and email to them or fax. airmail is about 2 weeks. so in the meantime get one here-get the highest dose 220 mcg. for cats it works differently than people. they need the stronger dose=the 44 and 125 is not strong enough for stubborn inflammation. It will get the steroids inside the lungs and may see results in as few as 5 days. its every 12 hours- given with aerokat chamber.

fritzthebrave website explains more.

It's not unusual for the pred to not work in oral form-some cats don't respond to pills- but inhaled meds help.

the green goop is an infection-that needs to be addressed as well...I hope you find a good vet to listen to you.
