This sounds strange - I know! But I have a kitten (8 mths old) who sometimes sneezes and actually shoots huge dry boogers out of his nose! When I say huge - I mean dime sized...and he's a kitten. He's otherwise healthy. I've asked the vet - but to no avail. He's been on 2 medicines to help an "upper respiratory infection" - but I don't think he's really got (or ever had) an upper respiratory infection - he has no other signs.

I can't figure this out...any info would be great!

We have a kitty that did this. He would expell very large, dry, hard with some bloody mucous on them. He was supposed to have a URI too. He did this for the first 2 years of his life and then it started to taper off.

We had his sinuses x-rayed and it did look like one nasal passage was narrowed, but nothing ever came of that.

I think as a kitten he got exposed to one of the nasty respiratory viruses and it took him a long time to fight it off. Only one other kitten in his litter survived.

That's *exactly* what he's doing (with the sometimes bloody mucus stuff too)! Thanks for your comments...I hope it tapers off soon. He seems very healthy - but the shelter he came from was HORRIBLY dirty! He also brought home ring worm with him...but seemed to be a carrier only. Anyway - good to know! I'll keep an eye out.

I have a nasty booger kitty.
Some of it is herpes related, and we keep it under control with lysine.
The rest is seasonal allergies. Keeping the windows closed (as much as we all love having them open!) has done wonders.

My OTB Bogart had a bad respiratory infection as a kitten and had the boogers his entire life. His sinus passages were permanently damaged with his URI and he was on antibiotics on and off his entire life.

I agree to get a second opinion. The way you go about managing treatment will depend on what is causing this. With Bogart, he was in the bathroom every day when we showered to steam him. To avoid building up a dependency to antibiotics, we had to learn to differentiate his normal sneezes from ones that indicated signs of infection, then switch him from one antibiotic to another each time. He was probably on antibiotics 4 times each year for 13 years. As he aged, it became much harder to manage and once he contracted CRF, we couldn't control it at all. Had I known about lysine back then, he would have gotten it.

So if you find out what the underlying cause is, you can get the right set of medicines done at the right time.

Frankie has a problem with big nasty boogers for all of his 2 years. He is constantly talking to the vet about it. They can be big green ones with blood in them at times. He is a healthy chubby baby otherwise. The vet thinks its allergies, but we are now going to send a sample of his boogers to Kearney(I live in a rural area) and have them checked for a fungal infection. Right now we are waiting for the big one to fly to put in a baggie and take to the vet. The first sample I got was last saturday and I didn't refrigerate the baggie with the boogie in it (yuck) so my vet told me to get another one...My baseboards are trashed with little frankie boogers.

Frankie has a constant supply of antibiotics when it gets real bad.
He also takes a over the counter anithistamine that the vet suggested.
He has the paste lysine to take also.

I was hoping (well, not really, but now I don't feel so alone) that someone else had nasty baseboards! This is slightly off topic, but how in the world do you clean them?

Teddy gets 1-2 courses of antibiotics a year as well, when it gets really out of control. He came from a 15 cat home where the cats were not well cared for, so he seemed to have a horribly untreated URI as well at some point that caused things to go haywire.

Definitely talk to the vet, and it will probably take some medication management before you can just keep things at bay with some lysine. We use 500-1000mg/day mixed in wet food, depending on how bad he is. Since he also has IBS, there are some other counfounding factors.

Bogart's were all over the house, not only on the baseboards but all along the walls, doors, cabinets, etc. If I didn't scrub them off when they were fresh (and you can't scrub the entire house down every day), then I used a metal scraper (the kind you use to apply plaster to a wall). I can't tell you the number of times that I had to repaint the wood and walls in my last house while he was alive (sometimes scraping took the paint off). I tried every cleaner out there, sprayed and wiped repeatedly, and those didn't always work.

And just an fyi......if you want to find them, a black light works great. It's scary what you find on the walls with a booger cat in the house, but it will find them.

I had no idea that the boogie problem was so common! I too was told by the vet to just do the Lysine for our 4 month old Pogue's humongous boogers, (My husband renamed him Booger Baby after this surprising kitty feature showed itself.) but it doesn't seem to do much. There are times when the poor baby actually stands on his hind legs, rubbing his nose with both front paws, huffing to get those big boogs out. When they splat on the floor, all of us crowd around them and stare in awe. How could he breathe at all with those human sized boogers up his teeny little nostrils? Its amazing.

I do have one concern though. Pogue is due for his neutering soon. I need to ask my vet if these respiratory issues could cause danger when he is under anethesia.

I just posted a thread about some weird stuff I found one Soleil's chest and on a rug the last couple of days...
http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=124394
I thought it may be coming from a period, but maybe it's just boogers?
The one one the chest surely were dry and seem boogerish.
What I found on the rug was just slimy (maybe snot)???

Both cats were sneezing about two weeks ago, but Haven't done so since... at least not when I'm around...

My cat does that too -- the vet said it's chronic and he may well outgrow it. Good to know others have! He's so sweet he's worth it, though.

My cleaning method? Spray bottle of water and a dried out scrubby sponge (the ones that are usually yellow with the green brillo-like stuff on one side). Liberally squirt the boogers with water and let them sit a little to soften. Then lightly dab-scrub them off with a corner of the scrubby side of the sponge. Works on my couch and most walls really well. Once the sponge softens, move to another corner (works better when it's stiff). There's probably some magic product that would work better, but this is what I have
And I know the water won't hurt the cats OR my many surfaces (paint, wood, fabric, metal, books, rugs, ETC.).

Just try to fight the gag reflex!

I use a magic eraser on my walls and base boards. It seriously takes half the time of anything else.
